I had this idea for awhile now and I've decided to put up here. It's my first real build, so I hope you enjoy.

The idea is simple folding table that won't take up too much space.

The table itself will be 2ft x 2ft x 40in when completely assembled.

Preface

You'll need:

Hardware:

  • 2in x 2in x 8ft wood board X2
  • 1.5in x 1.5in x 54in wood board X1 (it could be another 2in x 2in, I just had this one lying around)
  • 2ft x 2ft x 3/8in plywood board X1
  • 1in all-purpose screws X16
  • 1/2in screws X 3
  • 5/16in x 3 1/2 in Hex bolts X4
  • 5/16in washers X4
  • 5/16in Hex nut X4
  • 2in corner bracket X2

Tools:

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Eye Protection
  • Gloves
  • Locking Pliers X2
  • Protractor
  • Measuring Tape
  • 5/16in Drill Bit
  • 1/8in Drill Bit
  • Phillips Head Bit
  • Pencil
  • Files X2 (One coarse and one fine)

The Legs: Part 1

To begin, take one of the two 8 foot 2in x 2in boards and measure 45in from one end. Mark and cut this spot. Measure again 45in form on end. Mark and cut the spot again. Now you'll have two 45in leg and a 6in stub. KEEP THE STUB. It will be used later.

Repeat for the other board to bring the total legs two four and the stubs to two.

Now measure 1ft 10 in (22in) from one end of the 54in board. Mark and cut. Again measure 1ft 10in (22in) from one end. This will give you two sides and a stub. KEEP THIS STUB.

The Legs: Part 2 (the Good Part)

This is gonig to be a long one.

First, mark the board 1/2 in from one end and dead center and repeat for ONE more board. You only need two. This will be where the bolt will connect the legs to the table top.

Next, on all four legs, using a protractor measure 60 degrees from 1/2in from one side. Mark this for later use. NOTE: this should be on the side you marked the bolt hole.

Drill the two holes using the 5/16in drill bit.

Cut the 60 degree line you marked. You will not need these stubs.

Now, looking at the leg with the angle side parallel to your body, measure 1ft 10in (22in) from the bottom of the angle. Mark this and center it on the board. This will be where the legs will connect. Repeat for all legs.

Drill the holes again using the 5/16in drill bit.

Take one of the 1ft 10in sides and put it against one side with the holes. Make it flush with the top (uncut end), and the longer of the two sides. Put the pencil through the top bolt hole and mark the board. Drill a hole in the board with the 5/16in bit. This is where the legs will connect to the table top. Repeat for the other side.

The put one bolt through the top hole on each leg and trace the top of the bolt on to the side. Remove the bolt. Using the coarse file, file down the edges of BOTH sides parallel to the hole. Do this until no wood is visible when side rotates around the bolt when connected to the leg. Repeat for the other leg.

Now a short one.

Offset the side one inch from each side of the panel. Trace the ends of the sides on to the panel. Remove the side. Mark three spots where you want your screws to go. Be careful to not put a screw near where the hole will be going.

Drill out these holes with the 1/8in drill bit. Realign the side with the end marks. Make sure the side closest to the hole is facing up. Put a pencil through all the joles in the panel and mark the side.

Now, drill pilot holes with the 1/8in bit into the side at the marked points. DO NOT go all the way through.

Screw the panel to the side using the 1in screws.

Repeat for the other side. Make sure the on the sides are on the same end.

The Support: Part 1

Put the two 6in stubs together and place both on the panel equidistance from either side and make it flush with the edge of the panel.

Trace the outline of the blocks.

Mark three places for the screws for each block (6 total). Recommend a V shape.

Drill the holes with the 1/8in bit.

Transfer the places of the holes on to the blocks and mark with a pencil. Drill pilot holes with the 1/8in bit. Do not go all the way through.

Join the blocks to the panel using 6 1in screws.

The Support: Part 2

On the 10in stub measure and mark 60 degrees from one of the corners.

Cut this line down the length of the stub. Keep the larger of the two halves.

On the uncut end of the one holed legs, attach on of the 2in brackets using two 1in screws. Repeat for the other side.

Next, position the angled wood block so that the angle side is on the ground. Then attach the block to a bracket/leg combo with the angled side facing up. This will have two points of connection.

Do the same for the other leg. This will have ONE point of connection.

Assembly

To put together:

  1. Place the legs with the two holes on the ground, angle side up.
  2. Put a bolt through each top hole so that the threaded sides are on the outside and the two legs mirror each other.
  3. Put a bolt through each middle hole so that the threads are on the inside and the legs mirror each other.
  4. Put two washers on each middle bolt.
  5. Put the two remaining legs on each middle bolt, angle side down, and secure each with a nut.
  6. Push the top bolt through the table top bolt holes so that the leg combo is on the inside.
  7. Secure with a nut.
  8. Use the locking pliers to tighten the bolts so they don't move and the legs can rotate freely.

To assemble:

  1. Start the table out as seen in pic. 2
  2. Holding the support attached to the legs grab and hold the support on the tabletop.
  3. Pull the table top support towards you, mind the legs, and pull it over the leg support.
  4. Push the tabletop away from you until it meets the leg support and stops.
  5. To disassemble reverse the steps.
