Simple Master Roshi Cosplay

In true fashion to every other year I waited until the last minute to create cosplay costumes for my boyfriend and I to wear at our local Con. Every year we do Dragonball characters and this year it will be no different. I am not in fact being Roshi, but he is. I just demoed the costume for my Instuctable. Not including collecting supplies, this costume took less than an hour to create.

The things you will need to complete this are :

- an orange button up shirt

- iron on letters

- purple fabric

- white fun fur

- fusible webbing

- an iron

- scissors

Roshi has had numerous outfits throughout the Dragonball series but his orange button up with the letters and triangles is the most iconic to me. It was extremely difficult for me to get my hands on an orange button up, surprise, surprise they aren't that popular. After visiting a thrift shop for the third time, I finally found one. You could always just dye a white one with orange fabric dye, probably what I should have done in the first place.

I had left over iron on letters from my costume that worked perfectly for Roshi's shirt. Iron on your letters arbitrarily over the front and back. At this point I would say less is more, you can always add if needed but not take away. Be sure you have the correct side of the iron on letters facing down. If you can see the letters facing you, it is the wrong way and they will melt onto the iron. Iron on letters until you are happy with the amount you have.

I didn't want to sew or glue the purple triangles onto the shirt. Those options would be messy or not look as nice. I went to the fabric store and along with getting the purple fabric, I got iron on fusible webbing. this product allows one fabric to be attached to another just by the heat of an iron. This product also creates a seal that prevents the fabric from fraying, so you don't need to worry about the raw edges.

Iron on the fusible webbing to the purple fabric and cut into triangles. Peel off the protective paper backing of the webbing, place onto the shirt and iron in place.

I couldn't find a beard at the costume shops around here that looked anything like Roshi's. They were either curly, too long or the wrong colour. I considered trying to modify one of these but I thought that if I messed it up, I would end up wasting way too much money. The simpler, cheaper and better looking option seemed to be making my own. I picked up some fun fur at the fabric store that seemed to be the perfect texture and legnth.

On the wrong side of the fabric I drew on a beard a moustache shape with a permanent marker. When doing this, be sure to have the fur going in the proper direction as hair would grow. Cut out the shapes and they can either be left separate or attached together with a hot glue gun. I chose to leave them separate as I think it will make talking easier and be more comfortable. The beard can be stuck on with two way tape, eyelash glue or guar gum. Your simple Roshi is done!
