Simple Led Brooch

I wanted to make something simple and cheap that could be made with kids, teenagers and grownups alike. You can keep it classic or add a fun twist like making a spaceship, anything is possible.

This project is inspired by the LED throwies with a fun twist.

Supplies

For this project, you will need:

  • 3v button cel (preferably a CR2032)
  • 5 mm LEDs
  • electrical tape
  • safety pins or magnets (these are optional)

Lighting Up the Leds

A LED light has a +/- (the long leg is the +) so does the battery, so when you put the +/- of the LED on the +/- of the battery the LED lights up.

(if the LED doesn't light up, you can just switch the +/- that fixes it).

You can add quite a lot of LEDs, if you add too much the LEDs will grow faint (and later makes taping it up considerably harder).

Add as many LEDs as your heart desires. If they push each other off of the battery, you can trim the ends, this doesn't affect the performance of the LEDs.

You can get really creative and make some really cool designs (I made a little spaceship :) )

Taping Up the Brooch

Now that you have an epic design, you probably don't want the LEDs falling off all the time, that's why taping it up is such an important step.

To tape it up, I used electrical tape, but you can use anything as long as it sticks.

What I find easiest is to cut a small strip of tape and stick it in the middle so that all the LEDs are sort of stuck on the battery, and then just wrap it around and in between the lights.

This is why I advised to not add too many lights, you could cut really slim strips so that they can fit in between the lights.

Show It Off to the World

Now that you taped the LEDs to the battery, it would be cool to show it off to the world or your family and friends.

There are multiple ways to do this:

1 magnets

if you have a magnet, you can put the magnet under your shirt put the LED brooch over the magnet, and it should stick.

2 safety pins

put a bit of tape over the safety pin and pin it on your shirt. I like this way the best, cause it stays on better with the magnet, there's always the potability that it could fall off, not with the safety pin.

3 double-sided tape

this is a solid way to keep it stuck on your shirt and the most accessible, that being said the probability for your LED brooch to fall off, is bigger

take your pick and do what ever makes you happiest :)
