Simple Desktop "Tesla Coil"
Ever wanted a tesla coil but found it too dificult or expensive? This is the alternative to one, not as awsome, but a lot easier and cheaper!
Parts
First you will need a plasma globe, or any other flyback transformer with a driver. I didn't have one, so I used my plasma globe instead. Then you will need a conductor, that is what will give off the sparks. I used a siren i had scince it had a copper cover.
Get the Components You Need From the Globe.
This is what I got from taking apart the plasma globe. The glass bulb was sitting really tight so I had to use some WD40 to get it out. You should keep it, you can use it for some other projekts. But the parts you need for this one is the base and the circuit board.
Getting Your Parts From the Siren.
After taking the siren apart I ended up with a bunch of stuff, but I only needed the copper cover and the funnel thing.
Assembly Part 1
The funnel and the cover for the globe fit perfectly together, so I just used some glue to hold it in place.
Assembly Part 2
The output wire from the transformer was too short, so I used a HV cable to extend it. Then it was just a matter of putting the parts together and threading the cable through the funnel and have it stick out the top. Afert that you need to put the copper cover on and screw it in place.
You Are Done!
Hook it up to a power supply and turn it on, just be careful not to touch the copper conductor. I used an insulated screwdriver to get an arc from it. Its not too big because I didn't connect the screwdriver to ground, but if you do the arc should be bigger, Ill leave that up to you.
Oh, I'm also not responsible for what you do with it, so use it on your own risk!
(PS. you can "safely", and by that I mean without getting shoched, touch it if you allready are holding something conductive in your hand, like a metal rod. Just hold it tightly!)
Otherwise, thank you for checking it out and I hope you like it!
(This is my first instructable and English isn't my first language (im in sweden) so dont mind the mistakes if you find any)
