I wanted to try sewing a camera bag. The purpose of this bag is to securely keep the camera away from dust and elements when shooting pictures and from damages when carrying. In this instructable, I'll talk about the steps I made to make it!

As with any sewing project, it needs:

  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Main fabric
  • Liner fabric
  • Foam padding, About 5mm thick
  • Zipper
  • 3cm webbing
  • Knife

Marking the Design

Using a camera you have, mark on the foam the size of the bag. I made the top and bottom side tapered shape and sides and cover a rectangle. Cut the foam out and use the pieces to mark it on both fabrics, Add 1.5cm boarder around the foam shape. Proceed to cut the fabrics

Making the Sides

To make sides of the bag, Align the same pieces of main and liner fabrics right sides out and sew 1 cm seam allowance on three edges. Then insert a corresponding foam padding piece inside and close with the fourth stitch. Do it on the remaining shapes. Note for easier shaping and turning score the long rectangle according to top and bottom sides.

I added a 3cm webbing,10 cm long on the bottom side

Assembly

With the right sides in, sew the sides on 1.5 cm seam allowance to make the body of the bag. Sew the cover on last. Cut down any excess fabric and zig-zag stitch on cover and body seam

Add the Zipper

Use about 25cm long zipper. Turn the bag so the right sides are out and align the zipper to the edge of the opening. Sew the zipper in place and then carefully align the other side of the zipper to the cover. Zipper I had was too long so I stitched the end of it and cut the additional length. Trim any excess thread and fabric and you are done.
