Simon Game With Makey Makey

For our 2023 STEAM Expo, we wanted to make something fun and interactive for our young attendees. We made a sensory mat for kids to walk on and that needed lots of copper sheets and special conductive tape. We had some left over so, we decided to make this fun Simon game that you can play with your feet.

stick adhesive copper sheets to the clipboards being careful to allow for the foil to be touching the metal clip part of the clipboard and also to be able to fold over the bottom edge to the backside of the clipboard. This allows for you to have several areas to attach the alligator clips to.

You will need to think about your arrows and the directions in which they will point and the colored tape you have and will use for each arrow to coordinate with the game and the way it looks on scratch. I used the tape to make the arrows but, if you have a cricut you have more options. The tape that I used (linked in supplies) is VERY STICKY! It is okay if you think you mess up though because you can turn the clipboards in any direction so that your arrows are pointing the right way and you can always add foil if your alligator clip needs to clip to the sides of the board rather than the top metal part or the bottom part where the foil folds over to the back.

Your bracelet should have a few sizes since it needs to fit snugly to the player's wrist and is touching the skin at all times in order for the player to play the game and move around without losing the ground (earth) connection. This is why you see 3 velcro dots on our bracelet.

Attach your clipboard arrows to the arrows on the makey makey. Make sure your colors match with the game. ex: your red arrow should be connected to the "up" arrow on the Makey Makey. The start board should be clipped to the space bar on the makey makey. The ground (earth) clip will be connected to your bracelet.

If you have never used a Makey Makey as a controller with Scratch before, we suggest you click here to get some quick access to a tutorial. Otherwise, make sure the Simon Game project page is open on scratch and you should be ready to go. Remember to click the green flag to start the game and then use the start board (you can use it to reset the game) attached to the space bar to start the game. Be ready because immediately after you click start your first sound and light color is shown and you might miss it!!! Have fun!!!
