Sight and Privacy Optimization in Dormitory (Shuangying Xu, Yuxin Qiu)
Sight and Privacy optimization in Dormitory
SITE
The site was located at Vahingen Campus in uni Stuttgart, It’s a dormitory for uni Stuttgart.
CONCEPT
We have found the current design is not very good for privacy. Everyone is closes their curtain to avoid direct sight contact, both from the road and from the room in front of them.
This project aims to provide a better evaluate system based on the privacy requirement, and gain more view into the room.
SITE ANALYSIS —— Privacy
We have analyzed the building around this dormitory, and the road around it. By creating a level to evaluate the privacy condition in this area, the basic information about privacy conditions can be seen from the pictures.
SITE ANALYSIS —— Views
The good point of this location is that this place is surrounded by a nice garden. As privacy to the inside is so important, the view form the outside is also considered as an important point.
Workflow
For the design part, we follow the design principle from the original design, using algorism to optimize the sight condition for each room and try to ensure that the new design will have the same amount of room as the old design.
In principle, our design is based on the urban scale and building scale.
The urban scale is for the unit position, angle, and height, and the building scale is for the detail of every building window’s orientation.
ANCHOR POSITION
First, we are evaluate about the urban design.
As the picture shows, we have set a anchor point for each unit. When the anchor moves, the unit will also move to new position.
HEIGHT
The second step about urban scale design are height design. With different height condition the sight view about each building will also be different. According to the beautiful view around the site. We are analysing the view in each area on the site. Then create a grid to evaluate it based on the view condition on each area. In order to get the better views for each building. We can use the height change to let more rooms get the good view, not just the one near the garden.
GROUP SHAPE & ORIENTATION
the degree of each unit will have diversity change. Then the evaluation will be based on the anchor position change and the unit degree change, to find the longest sight distance for every building in the site.
UNIT DIVERSITY & ORIENTATION
Then after we decide the urban scale design, we are now goes in to more detail about the unit design. At the original design, each unit have two buildings, and they are using the same staircase. Each floor has 8 rooms in total. So, in this dormitory, it’s all 4er WG. We have followed those rules, also set one floor with 8 rooms. And each 4 rooms have a shared bathroom and the kitchen.
The point about our design is mainly about to change the orientation of each room, so that it will not have a direct eye contact in between rooms and room with outside roads. In this way, people will feel safe to live in it.
ADJUSTMENT & CONNECTION
After the complexity orientation of the building and the room. There are always edges that not suitable for living. At the last step, we manually connect the hard edge in between those buildings.
RESULTS
At the result, we can see the rooms form the floor plan. Compare to the original design, we are not losing the area of the rooms, and even gain more rooms for student to live. But the most important is we have gained the better view for each room, and also better privacy.
