Sidewalk Chalk Art

IMG_5380.jpeg

Introduction: This sidewalk chalk activity is a great way to get outside on a sunny afternoon. Last summer while in quarantine me and my family did this it took about two hours for 5 kids to do. This weekend I decided to do another one for instructables but this time do more colors and make it look even better. It can entertain children of all ages or even adults without making a big mess and at the end you have a beautiful work of art. At the end of this project you will have a mosaic collage on your street, patio, or sidewalk by just using simple materials that you may have already! So if you’re tired of sitting on your phone or computer and want to get outside follow these steps to have a fun filled afternoon!

Tip: I suggest checking the weather before starting this. It started to rain as we were putting tape down and it make the colors look dull and the tape was harder to put down :)

Supplies

-broom

-tape measure

-masking tape

-chalk

-scissors

Step 1: Find a Clear Spot

The first step is to find a clear spot to make your design. It should be on cement in a place cars will not be in the way.

If it is in the road you risk cars running it over while the tape is down

Step 2: Gather Materials

The next step is to gather all your materials; broom, tape measure, masking tape, scissors, and chalk. Take them outside to the spot you have chosen.

Step 3: Sweep

After you gather your materials, sweep the spot you have chosen with the broom so that it is nice and clean. You do this because it will help the tape stick better, and you don't want leaves, sticks, or dirt in your way.

Step 4: Tape the Perimeter

Next you can measure out how big you want your area to be. For mine I made it ten feet by ten feet. But you can make it as big or as small as you want. After you measure it out to make it even you can cut pieces of tape using your scissors. Make sure it is long enough to go around the perimeter of your measurements. This should lead to you having tape in a square shape ready for the next step.

After you lay down the tape I found it beneficial to step on it so that it sticks to the ground better.

Step 5: Tape Base Lines

After you have your border all lined up you can start adding your base lines. This means you can cut 5-7 large pieces of tape using your scissors and lay them down to connect the borders with them going in all directions.

Step 6: Add All of the Tape

IMG_5200.jpeg

After adding the large pieces of tape you can cut small pieces of tape and connect the borders and the base lines together. You can do as many as you want till you have a bunch of small triangles and no giant spots anymore

As I started this step it started raining so I was not able to put down as much tape as I wanted to.

Step 7: Start to Color

Next grab your chalk and choose all the colors you want to use. You should use more than 4 different colors. Pick your first piece of chalk and start coloring inside the triangles. Don't put the same color in adjacent triangles.

Step 8: Finish Coloring

After using your first color use another color to fill in even more triangles. Repeat this process until you have colored in all your triangles.

Step 9: Peel Up Tape

After you color all the triangles makes sure you did not miss any spots. If you did not then you can start picking up the tape.

Step 10: Enjoy!

Peel all the tape up until you just see your shapes of color on the cement. Throw away your tape and enjoy your beautiful artwork :)
