Shrunken Head // Car Charm
I think one of the most memorable parts of the Harry Potter series was the Knight Bus scene. Now I know a huge fan who love the franchise more than I do. After he lost a bet on how much Chipolte he could eat, I felt a little pity for him. As a 'you tried your best but didn't eat three burrito's' prize I decided to make him Dre Head, the talking shrunken head to hand in his car.
If you have perused my other instructables you will notice I made Dre Head before. I actually intended to gift it to the same person as a car charm but it was much too big, so now Dre hangs from the ceiling in our dining room.
This build took about 2 hours and didn't cost me a thing because I already had all the materials.
Materials
- Aluminum foil
- Paper clay
- Sculpey premo
- Yarn (or rope)
- String (to hang head)
- Paint (black and brown, acrylic)
- Elmer's glue
- Hot glue
Basic Shape
I started by rolling a ball of aluminum foil. I decided to have a base of foil to save clay, and make the ornament lighter. I coated the entire ball in clay. Then I made the basic structure of a brow bone.
Facial Features
After letting the clay dry, I decided to go in with Premo Sculpey because it was less fiber-y. My Sculpey was really hard and crumbly (is this normal?) so I folded some Vaseline into the clay and worked it until it was soft.
I built up some more features withe the Sculpey. I rolled out two balls for the eyes, and shaped them with a pencil eraser.
I rolled a bigger ball of clay for the nose and poked two holes in the nose with the pencil's tip.
I rolled out a tube of clay for the mouth and shaped it with the eraser.
Dreadlocks
I could not find any yarn in the house. It was terrible. So I went to plan B. I found some rope with soft fibers, and cut out hair length strips.
I brushed the hair with a car brush so it was really frizzy.
If you would like to see how to make dreads out of yarn
Dying the Dreads
I made a mixture of 1 part black paint, 1 part brown paint (acrylic), 1 part Elmer's glue, to 1 part water. I coated the rope strands in the mixture and rolled it into a dread with my hands.
Bad Lobotomy
I drilled a hole through the head with a drill, then threaded a string through the hole.
Painting
I painted the head an olive color, then went over the highlights in a lighter green. I brushed a small amount of red paint on the lips as well.
I cut the knots off the ends of the dreads.
Hair Implants
I used hot glue to glue all the dreads in place. I wrapped a rubber band around the bottom of his weave to help shape the dreads. After a day I took the rubber band off
Done
And we're all done.
What a nice severed head to hang in your car.
