Shoe Horn Out of Plastic Bottles!

In very little time I have managed to create a shoe horn out of plastic water bottles.

The method is very simple and easy to make, all you have to do is ensure you have a few empty water bottles hanging around.

Supplies

Materials that you will need include:

  • 3 plastic water bottles (1 needs to be mount Franklin)
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Clear Tape
  • A shoe

Drawing Cutting Lines

Before we cut any bottles, we need to draw our lines where we want to cut to mimic the shape of a regular shoe horn.

Using your marker you want to draw straight lines from top to bottom to maximise how much material you receive from the bottle. On the Mount Franklin water bottle ensure you draw around the bumps as this part is going to act as our hooks for the shoe horn to work.

Cutting the Bottles

After you draw the cutting lines, you're going to go ahead and cut the shapes you have drawn with your scissors.

To start the cut correctly, I poked a hole in the bottles to create a hole I can start cutting from. This makes the cutting easier especially around the curves of the bottles.

Using Tape to Connect the Bottles

After you have cut all the bottles in the shape you need, you can move onto connecting the pieces together using clear tape.

When placing the tape on each part ensure you leave enough space for the pieces of plastic to overlap each other . This is to create stability within the shoe horn. You are going to want to tape both the inside and outside to secure the bottles together and to ensure the shoe horn doesn't fall apart after one use.

Layering Extra Plastic

Once the main structure of the shoe horn is all connected together, you can look at providing extra support in the middle of the shoe horn using extra plastic to create layering. In this step you use the skills you learnt in 'Step 1, 2, and 3' to create layering parts to tape on the outside of your shoe horn towards the middle.

After these parts have been taped on you can easily notice the improvement as before adding the layers it would have been flimsy and weak in the middle of the shoe horn.
