Shipping Container Classroom

whole.png

This is an outdoor classroom made from reusing a shipping container. Classrooms made from these large bins could provide a learning environment to those who cannot afford luxury buildings. With more accessible education, students everywhere will be able to achieve their dreams. This classroom comes with both an inside and an outside component.
This classroom idea also can be connected with programs such as Fill-A-Backpack. Fill-A-Backpack is an event where people fill empty backpacks with school supplies a child may need. These are then donated to places with less access to education or education funds. This ties in well with affordable classrooms, and could be closely related programs in the future.

Supplies

To create this classroom, you will need 5 main supplies, along with some tools. The 5 main tools are shown in the image. 1, the shipping container. 2, a window. 3, lights. 4, desks and chairs. 5, school materials. Additionally, you will need the tools necessary to modify the walls and install the lights.

Create a Window

The first step to this design is the making of the window. A shipping container has little to no air flow, so a window is important for comfortable breathing. Cut out a wide hole in the long side of the container, and install a window. To prop it up, you can add legs that connect back to the container.

Install the Lights

The shipping container also has poor lighting, so we must add lights. These can be of any design. Since the container is quite long, you may need to add a few sources along the ceiling. The container is also tall, so I suggest hanging lights, so it is closer to the floor.

Insert Shelves

Students and teachers both need space to store their supplies and materials. These shelves make use of the tall structure of this container. With the Fill-A-Backpack operation, students will have enough materials to carry in their backpacks, as well as store on the shelves in the classroom.

Desks and Chairs

Add a teacher's desk on the side opposite the door, then add many student's desks in rows facing the teacher.

Wall Hooks

Wall hooks can be implemented into the wall of the shipping container classroom. This gives students a place to hang their backpacks, coats, and other belongings. The teacher can use these hooks as well. In the image they are being used to hang these backpacks.

Outdoor Setup

Outdoor, set up some tables and benches surrounding those tables. Learning outside can improve a student's learning ability, and gets kids excited about learning. Additionally, since cost effective, the outdoor component can be implemented almost anywhere.
