This was a solution to have an outdoor light that can be switched on when needed, and could also time out at the push of a button.

Using a shelly is cheaper than installing a sensor and gives more user flexibility and control.

Simply push the button, the light turns on and stays on.

HOLD the button for any more than .5 of a second and the user customisable timer beings its countdown to turn the light off.

and if you forget, simply use the shelly app to turn the light off.

1) Wiring.

Connect the shelly as per the included wiring instructions.

These are attached for quick reference and are also available from the shelly website :

Connect the power supply to configure and test the functionality before installing on-site. This makes it nice and easy to fault find or making any configuration changes. If you don't know what you're doing you should engage your electrician for this step)

With the device powered up, use the app to find and configure your shelly.

I am not going to cover adding the new device (in the menu select add a device, choose your wifi network and enter the network password, this will configure the shelly to your wifi)

Once you have the device added the following key settings are required :

1) add your device to a room e.g outside

2) switch settings (select the switch) open the settings tab ( i ) symbol

  • Power on default mode = restore last mode
  • button type - select "momentary AND tick the don't activate if the button is long pushed) - This is important, it means when you long press the button the light won't turn off and the timer will start counting down.
  • Firmware update - This is up to you, do it before you start or after you finish.
  • Longpush Duration - Important that you set this long enough for your long push to be deliberate, I use 500ms (1/2 a second)
  • external switch - leave this un selected
  • Sync name - up to you if you want to use this, its handy if you have more than one device controlling the switch.
  • Time zone and Geo-location - leave this selected (If you choose to set active times this will be useful to you)
  • Factory Reset - Leave this enabled, if you are locked out of your device it is an easy way to reset it.
  • Device reboot (this re starts your device, no need to push this button)
  • Soft reboot when wifi connection is lost - again read the description and use it if you want.
  • Device information (exactly what it says it is)

3) Create a scene.

  • "when" - "device_name" input is long pressed
  • "DO" turn off "device_name" [change state (turn off relay) + Delay this action execution "insert time here in seconds"
  • active times - You can set this or just leave it always active (which I have done)
  • Save scene

You can also share the device with others, you just need their email address. Remember this gives someone control of your shelly from the cloud so be careful who you share it with, your mates could have a good time messing with your lights at 3 am one morning.
