The Sheet Bend is recommended for joining two ropes of unequal size. The thicker rope should be used for the simple bight. It works equally well if the ropes are the same size.

IMG_0005.JPG

Take the thicker of the two ropes that you wish to join together and double it back on itself. (Creating a Bight)

Now take the thinner of the two ropes you wish to join and feed it upwards through the loop (Bight) of the larger.

Now feed it behind both Feed and short end of the thicker rope.

Now feed it under itself from where it entered.

Now all that is left to do is pull tight.

Progress to next stage if you wish to add extra strength to this knot.

To make it stronger, loop the thinner rope around twice before feeding it back under itself.

Now all that is left to do is pull tight.
