Sewing Kit Case Hinge Fix

My mother keeps all her sewing stuff in a plastic case with a transparent lid with hinges.

Two of these hinges broke and the whole thing was dysfunctional, so I took up the task of restoring back some functionality. She really loves her green case.

If you have a similar broken case here's an easy way to fix it.

Here's what you will need for this fix :

• a needle
• some nylon fishing thread
• a lighter
• a pin

The fishing thread I used is shown in the photo. I always buy Japanese stuff when I can.

Take the pin and heat up the pointy end using the lighter. You can use a candle as well.

Then begin making some holes in the plastic lid. In my case I made 10 holes.

Thread the needle with the fishing line, then tie together with a simple knot the two loose ends.

The purpose of the knot is to hold the stitches under tension.

If you want you can make as many knots (at the same place) as you think it is necessary. In my case I made three knots.

Pick a hole from the two edges, insert the needle and begin stitching.

Let's suppose for example that you chose the far right hole to start from. Then you loop the needle around the green axle and insert the needle through the second hole and so on and so forth until you reach the final hole.

Make sure that the hinge is functional and that it turns with ease.

When you finish stitching, cut the thread from the eye of the needle.

Then tie multiple simple knots to secure the ends.

If you wish you can trim the edges off with scissors.

You just saved a plastic container from ending at the landfill!

PS : I didn't bother fixing the middle broken hinge because the container opens and closes sufficiently well with the other two hinges alone. I am lazy, I admit it!
