Sew a Cat Pillow

Download the cat pillow pattern pieces and let's get started!

The pattern pieces print on multiple pages and need to be taped together. Match up the letters and use them as a guide to taping the pages together. Tape along the dashed lines.

Supplies needed:
13″ x 13″ piece of fleece fabric
polyfill polyester stuffing
scrap of felt fabric for nose
black embroidery floss and needle
threaded sewing machine
pins
needle and thread

With the fabric right sides together, pin the cat pillow pattern to two layers of fleece fabric and trace around the pattern. Be sure to trace on the wrong side of the fabric or use a mark-b-gone pen. Mark-b-gone pens will wash off with water.Visit SBU for a “fabric wrong sides together” tutorial.

Cut the fabric leaving a 1/4″ seam all the way around the pillow.

First, let’s create a road map that you can use to stitch the face.

Put the paper pattern on top of the one of the pillow fabric pieces you just cut. Place it on the right side of the fabric. Using a large needle, poke holes along the eyes, eyelashes, nose, mouth and the ends of each whisker through the paper pattern.

Then poke the end of a pencil through each hole and make a mark onto the fabric.
The outline of dots that you made will be your guide to stitching the face.

Using black embroidery floss (or crotchet thread) and needle backstitch the mouth and eyes and use one long stitch for each whisker.

Pin the nose pattern to a scrap of felt fabric and cut around the pattern.

Using a hot glue gun, glue the nose to the cat's face.

With the fabric right sides together, pin the ear pattern to two layers of fleece fabric and trace around the pattern. Be sure to trace on the wrong side of the fabric or use a washable mark-b-gone pen.

Cut around the ear leaving a 1/4″ seam.

Repeat the previous two steps to make a second ear.

With fabric right sides together, stitch the ear along the line you drew on the fabric leaving the bottom of the ear open to reverse. Repeat with the second ear.

Reverse both ears right side out through the opening at the bottom.

Lay down one of the fabric pieces of the cat pillow with the wrong side facing up.

Place both ears at the top of the pillow on each side as indicated on the pattern with the ears facing inward as shown.

Place the other piece of fabric on top.
Note, the fabric pieces are right sides together with the ears in between. Stitch the pieces together along the line you drew on the fabric leaving a two inch opening to reverse and stuff.

Reverse right side out through the opening.

Stuff with polyester stuffing through the opening. Use small bits of stuffing at a time so that it’s not lumpy.

Stitch the opening closed.
