Seven Strand Braided Circle Scarf
this is a fun project, great for beginners. it takes about four hours to complete. this is a great addition to any fall or winter wardrobe. I think that this project would be great with other types of braids.
remember have fun, be careful, be safe, and enjoy.
Materials
For this instructable I used:
A sewing machine
A pair of fabric scissors
A large piece of dark pink corduroy
Thread in a contrasting color
Thread in a matching color
Straight pins
Spring clamps (I used these to hold the pieces down while I braided)
Instructions on how to do a seven strained braid.
Cut the Pieces
For the braid I used seven strips that are 2" by 43"
To bind one end of the braid together I used a piece about 2" by 12"
Hem the Edges
Hem the long sides of all seven of the strips that are 2" by 43". I did this in a contrasting color.
Ready to Braid
Now take the seven stripes that will be braided and pin them to the binding stripe. Now sew these together. See pictures for reference. Now you are ready to braid
Braid
Now just braid the seven strands together. I did this by clamping the end with the binding to my picnic table with a couple of spring clamps.
Sew the Braid Together
.Once the scarf is braided sew a seam across the end that does not have the binding. This will keep the braid from coming apart.
Trim the Excesse
Now trim any excess like all the extra little ends below the seam in the end of the braid and any extra length from the binding on the other end
Cut the Binding
The binding needs to be a little bit longer than the braid and about 4" wide you will need the cut two of these.
Pin on the Binding
Fold the binding in half and pin it to the braid. See pictures for reference. Do this on both sides.
Sew on the Binding
The trick here I'd to go slow and to be very careful. I sew these seams in a matching color.
Trim the Excesse
Trim any excess binding from the back of the scarf.
Cut the Last Piece of Binding
This piece of binding need to be about 5" wide and double the height of the scarf plus about 2-4"
Sew It All Together
This is where thing get pretty difficult. If you have not trimmed the excess go back and do that.
Fold one of the long sides of the binding under so that no raw edges are showing on this side, then wrap the binding around one end of the scarf so that where the pieces join is in the back of the scarf sees picture for reference. Sew up one side then sew up the back to close the flat piece of fabric into a tube.
Now that you have one end sewn into a tube wrap the other end into the tube and turn the edge of the tube so that no raw edges are showing. Now sew up this side.
Trim the little strings and your done.
enjoy.
