Serbian Treat: Kolac Sa Makom
'Kolac sa makom,' aka cake with poppies in Serbian, is a treat that is made in many parts of Europe. Many cultures have their own version and recipe, and this is the way that it is most traditionally made in Serbia. It is also unique due to it being able to be both vegan and not vegan depending on which ingredients you switch out.
Supplies
For the actual cake itself, you will need:
- 200 grams of poppy seeds
- 1 2/3 of a cup of milk (you can also use water if you would like a more vegan option!)
- 1 1/2 of a cup of sugar
- 3/4 of a cup of oil
- 2 1/3 cup of flour
- 12 grams of baking powder
For the dark chocolate, you will need:
- 100 grams of dark chocolate
- A small slice of butter (vegan butter works too!)
- 1 cup of sugar
And in terms of other supplies, you will need:
- A baking tray
- A measuring cup
- Any sort of spoon
- A small pan
- Baking paper
- Oven
- Stove
Batter
First is to mix in the batter. To do this you have to mix all of the ingredients listed above. The order of it does not matter, however I recommend putting all the wet ingredients together first before putting in the flour and baking powder. Stir it all with a spoon until the batter becomes nice and smooth. Make sure there are not little chunks in the mixture!
Pour the Batter Onto the Baking Tray
The next step is to pour the batter onto a baking tray. Make sure that you put the baking paper underneath it so that it doesn't stick! Put the oven on for 370 and wait 35 minutes for it to bake.
Take the Cake Out of the Oven
Now you are finished with the cake! Take it out of the oven and make sure that it is ready using a toothpick.
Wait for the Cake to Cool Down
Note that this is a very important step because the dark chocolate will not stick to the cake if the cake is still hot.
Start Making the Chocolate
After finishing the cake and waiting for it to cool, you can start to make the chocolate syrup. Put all of the ingredients listed into a small pan.
Melt the Ingredients Into a Chocolate Syrup
After putting all the ingredients, put the stove on high and start to mix all of the ingredients with one another. You will know when it is finished when the chocolate syrup becomes a nice and thick mixture.
Spoon Pour the Chocolate Onto the Cake
When you're finished, spoon pour the chocolate onto the cake. Make sure that is is nice and smoothly put.
Let the Chocolate Cool
Let the chocolate cool on the cake. Both leaving it out and putting it in a refrigerator work.
You're Done!
Now you can cut the cake into small pieces and serve!
