Sensory Bear 🧸

I made a sensor bear that lights up when it's shaken and plays two songs "You Are My Sunshine" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" when either the right or left button on the circuit board is held down. The reason I decided to make this is because I wanted to make something that is kid friendly and feels safe to carry around.

Supplies

Tools: ️

  • Sewing Machine
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Needle
  • Thread (your choice depending on the color of the bear): white, tan, and black.
  • Polyester Fiberfill
  • 2x Fabric (your choice of color and fabric): 1-meter fluffy tan fleece for the body and 1/2-meter white fleece for the ears, muzzle, tail, and chest
  • Felt fabric for the eyes and nose
  • Adafruit Circuit Playground
  • Computer
  • Battery pack
  • 2 AAAA Batteries

I bought this package of sewing patterns at Hobby Lobby. Credit for the stuffed animal goes to Simplicity. The unit number for this sewing pattern package is S9414. I decided to go with the stuffed animal on the bottom right.

Step 1: I got the body pattern out and placed pins around the sides to cut out the body. This method was applied to all the pieces that needed to be cut out.

Step 2: After getting all the patterns out and placing pins to cut them out, the results were two pieces of the body, front of the head, back of the head, two pieces of half circles for the tail, two earpieces, belly piece, nuzzle, two circles for eyes, and the nose.

Step 3: A small triangle was folded in and sewed using a thread and needle on the back of the head to make the head flat and consistent when sewing the front part of it to it.

Step 4: I sewed the stomach, muzzle, ears, eyes, and nose using a thread and needle onto the front part of the bear. *I decided to cut out a heart and sew it onto the stomach, this can be your own choice of adding.

Step 5: I sewed the two pieces of the tail together using a thread and needle, stuffed it, and then sewed the top part close.

Step 4: I then sewed the Adafruit Circuit Board with a thread and needle to the back side of the front of the bear. I made sure to use a lighter color thread that way it doesn't show on the front.

Step: I used the sewing pins and place both the front and back pieces of the body placed together. This will help facilitate the sewing process by keeping both pieces even. The fluffy side faces inwards and the rough side faces outwards.

Step 9: Repeat the same process as Step 8, but for the head pieces this time.

Step 10: Using the sewing machine, sew the pieces together and turn them inside out. This applies for the head too .

Step 11: Stuff the head and leave the body unstuffed to connect the cable to the circuit board and code.

Step 12: Using Adafruit: https://makecode.adafruit.com/ code the circuit board. Here is the code for mine. The problem I ran into was figuring out the music tempo. Due to not having many options, I had to improvise and got the code correct. *Disclaimer: Be patient, this step takes a little bit longer. It's worth it though!

Step 13: Connect the battery pack to the circuit board, and place it close to the lower back of the bear.

Step 14: Stuff the body and leave the top unsewed.

Step 12: Using a needle and thread, sew the head onto the body. This connects the bear and rounds out the whole piece together.
