Self-Cutting Toilet Paper Holder

It can be very cumbersome to rip and tear a sheet of toilet paper the way you intended. There are some products on the market that remedy this problem, but storage then becomes an issue. This instructable will cover a simple and easy way to fix both of these problems at once.

Supplies

  • 1.5'' x 1.5'' Wood Boards
  • 1.5'' x 0.75'' Wood Boards
  • 0.5'' Wood Board
  • Screws (#6x1/2in and #8x2in)
  • 1/8 in Drill Bit
  • Serrated Plastic Strip
  • Wood Glue

Step 1: Make Cuts

PP1.jpg

Use a circular saw or table saw to make the following cuts:

  • 2ft x 1.5'' x 1.5'' (1)
  • 20'' x 1.5'' x 1.5'' (3)
  • 5'' x 1.5'' x 0.75'' (12)
  • 1'' x 1.5'' x 0.75'' (1)
  • 8'' x 8'' x 0.5'' (1)

For the 8'' x 8'' board, squares with 1.5'' sides will be cut from each corner leaving a "plus sign" shape.

Step 2: Attach Handle

Drill a hole at the top of the 2ft board and partially into the 5 inch board. After applying a small amount of wood glue between them, screw them together until tightened. Repeat this process at the other end of the 5 inch board using the 1'' x 1.5'' x 0.75'' piece.

Step 3:Attach Beams/Brackets

PP3.jpg

Using the 2ft board, one 20in board, and 3 of the 5in boards, align as seen above. The first 5in piece should be 6.25'' from the bottom, and each piece afterwards should be 4.25'' apart (from the center of the piece). Drill holes and secure using #8 x 2in screws. Apply wood glue as needed.

Once the boards are secured, place brackets 2 inches from the bottom of the beams and secure using #6 x 1/2in screws.

Repeat this process using the two remaining 20in boards.

Step 4: Install Connecting Beams

PP4.jpg

Using 4 of the 5in boards, install onto the 20in boards exactly 2.25in from each beam and 4.25in apart from each other. Apply wood glue and install using #8 x 2in screws. Once the 4 boards are in place, attach this section with the section containing the handle.

Step 5: Install Base

Place the base between the beams and rest onto the brackets as shown. Once in place, carefully screw base into place using #6 x 1/2in screw. Be sure not to let the screws penetrate the board.

Step 6: Installing Cutter

Cut the serrated plastic strip to 5 inches and glue (using either wood glue or super glue) to one of the 5in segments, being sure to hang about half its width. Install this segment onto the top of the side opposite the handle.

At this point, fill with toilet paper and you're all set!
