Sculptable Silicone Putty for Making Molds, Impressions, and More
Sometimes we need a last minute durable mold, but we all know how long silicone takes to cure. That's why this sculptable silicone putty is perfect for making last minute molds, impressions, and more.
Supplies
Supplies for this project include:
- Silicone #1 (100% silicone)
- Silicone gun
- Rubber gloves (optional but recommended)
- Popsicle sticks
- Disposable bowls
- Cornstarch
- Food coloring (any color)
Activating the Silicone
Before we jump into this project, It's important to know that silicone #1 releases really strong fumes similar to the sent of vinegar, so its best to do this project in a well ventilated area. To start this project off, place food dye into the center of the paper bowl. Depending on how much dye you add in, the color of your silicone putty will vary. Next, place a generous amount of silicone on top of the food dye and mix using a Popsicle stick. It is important to know that once the silicone is fully mixed, the curing stage will have started and you'll have about 5 minutes to complete the next step.
Making the Putty Kneadable
Scoop a generous amount of cornstarch in a separate bowl. Gloves are optional for this next step but they're recommended for anyone who doesn't want to dye they're hands with food coloring. Fold the cornstarch into your putty mixture. I recommend starting out using the Popsicle stick to fold the cornstarch in and then moving to your hands. You'll know that the putty is finished when you have a nice, solid, non transparent, color.
Creating Impressions, Molds, Ect.
Once you have your finished putty, you have about 5 minutes to use it. I used my putty to make perfect impressions of random objects I had lying around the house. For making impressions, just take a ball of the putty big enough to fit the object, use your palm to press the putty flat on to a paper towel, and press the object into the putty. After just 15 minutes your moldable silicone putty should be fully cured and ready to use.
