Scrollwork Art

for this piece of art i tried to u minimal supplies and materials. Thus I used an a4 paper, drawing pencils (hb,2b,8b), ruler, a playing card (as stencil) and an eraser. this was a new and simple way of passing time for a while.

The Border

drawing a border is very important since all the space needs to be filled by scrolls or by shading. i drew the border 15cm X 11.5cm with a 0.5cm offset for a border inlay

The Basic Idea

so this is the base to work off of. these scrolls and card gives me an idea of how much space i need to fill with scrolls and how much empty space to leave. this step is also very important, if you didn't do this there will be no groundwork to work on and without ground work things start to get out of hand and become very messy. I started at the corners which give me a place to start with a simple design. In this i did two similar three-scroll triangle on bpoth the diagonal corners. The card is the main part of the drawing, it is drawn touching the backbone of the scrolls. this is the basic layout of this drawing.

The Scrollwork

the scroll work part of the drawing needs to be done first as it is the focus of this whole thing. So i fill up all the space with backbones and i tried this overlapping thing over the card. i have also started filling in some leaves on the top right corner.

this is how it looks with all the scrollwork is done

The Border Inlay

so the border inlay is a simple but beautiful decorative element that is added along the border. to do this i just followed a video by ken hunt.

The Card Border

the card border on the backing of the card is pretty standard, so i copied of the card i was using as a stencil. The border is 0.5cm wide all the way around.

The Backing

the backing on the card is also a big part, because is covers a lot of space. So i drew something very basic linework of sorts and it ends with a shaded diamond(because i messed up the line that should have continued. For this i just drew line in the backing border with slight angle, drew line all the way to the center.

Shading the Background

i think this i where the whole drawing comes to life. I just took an 8b pencil and shaded the whole thing. Only the empty space should be shaded and the overlapping card should be kept in mind.
