Scissors

IMG_4324.jpeg

Here is a cheap 3d printed solution to one of the essential tools in any crafts project. These scissors are an easy and useful project to make for your home, office, or classroom! They are child-safe to use due to their blunt edge, but cut just as well as any other scissors. Additionally, this material is recyclable and biodegradable (separately, from other materials), keeping the environment clean and reducing pollution. Feedback is encouraged in order to refine aspects of this project (material, size, etc.).

Supplies

Materials:

  1. Generic PLA Filament

Hardware:

  1. Any 3D Printer (0.4 mm nozzle recommended)

Software:

  1. Fusion 360
  2. Slicing Software (corresponding to your printer)

Set the Dimensions

Set the dimensions of the project to be in inches in the browser on the top left.

Draw & Dimension the Blade

step 2.png

Roughly sketch this shape using two three-point arcs and lines to create the blade shape with a hole for a rivet. Then use the dimensions and constraints above to fully define the sketch.

Drawing the Handle

Because everyone has a different hand size, this is very customizable and you can create it according to your hand type. For this example however, we simply use two eclipses to create a handle and three-point arcs to connect it to the body. Some tangent constraints are needed to avoid unnecessary overlap.

Creating the Shape of the Blade

First extrude the handle part of the scissors symmetrically, then extrude the blade part, this is because we only want to fillet the blade side to make it sharp. Lastly, combine the bodies.

Fillet the Edges

Select the faces above using the fillet tool to make the corners of the scissor smooth and feel better to use. Apply the value above. Now your scissor part is complete!

Finishing Steps

First select the screw hole as the axis for the move tool since we want the scissor to be at a good place to begin the print, entering the values above in the second image will flip it and bring it flat to the origin. Then we want to copy and paste the scissor part to create another identical copy. lastly create components out of both of the scissor parts and name them respectively. You have now created a pair of scissors!
