Scented Coasters

These beautiful cloth coasters give off a pleasant fragrance when a hot cup is placed on them.  They make a wonderful holiday gift for both family and friends!  Here are instructions for making a set of four.

Materials

You Will Need:
-1/4 yard printed fabric
-9 x 12 in. piece of felt
-1/4 yard tightly woven muslin (available at most craft and fabric stores)
-fabric scissors
-tacky glue
-2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
-2 teaspoons ground cloves
-2 teaspoons ground nutmeg

Cut out eight 5-inch squares from the printed fabric, four 4-inch squares from the felt, and eight 4-inch squares from the muslin.

Place four of the printed fabric squares face down on a flat surface.

Place a felt square on top of each fabric square, then a muslin square on top of each felt square.

Mix the spices together in a small bowl, and sprinkle a spoonful of the mixture on the center of each muslin square.

Line the edges of the muslin squares with tacky glue, and lightly press another muslin square on top of each one.

Line the edges of the printed fabric squares with glue, and lightly press another printed fabric square on top of each one.  As soon as the glue dries, the coasters are ready to be used!

Variations

For more variety, try adding in different spices, such as allspice or ginger.  You can also use potpourri in any fragrance you like, after grinding it into fine particles with a food processor.
