Sawdust Glass Coaster

Hello makers !

This project is based on Reuse of material to make something Usable in daily life and not make any environmental problem through waste.

In this Reuse project, I make a glass coaster (Lid) to stop evaporating liquid from glass or prevent any particle or flies to into contact of liquid.

Coaster will also use to put glass on surface to protect able or other surfaces and ensure them out of stain of liquid.

Lets gather all supplies listed below and start making.

1> 100 gm Sawdust

2> 100 gm Resin and Hardener(As per require)

3> 3D Printer access ( optional #1 )

4 > PVC sheet for boundary making (optional #2)

5> plastic sheet as bottom

We collect sawdust from a wood workshop,which is a waste product for them.

particles of saw need to be not very small.

We separate smaller particles of dust by using a mesh filter.

Idea is to make a Coaster for covering glass and stop evaporating water and enter outside contamination.

To make a solid coaster, generally we need to press sawdust at higher pressure to combine particles in solid.

In this project, we don't have a high pressure impact machine.

So, we use Resin and Hardener to mix with Sawdust to make a solid part at the end of the process.

Normal glass top diameter is not greater than 75 mm .

I decided on 70mm diameter and 10 mm thickness for the Coaster.

we have 2 option to make coaster.

Option # 1 >> make 3d printed mold and pour resin in for custom shape.

option #2 >> make mold with PVC sheet and pour resin inside.

I use 3d printer for making mold and go with Option #1.

I use Autodesk Fusion360 for making mold designs.

1. I draw 75 mm circle diameter and 75 mm for side of square.
2. Take offset outside 1 mm for making wall.
3. Extrude 10mm height for make 3d mold.

If you want to make a unique geometry coaster for glass, you need 3d printer to make custom shape mold.

Else, you make mold using plastic PVC sheet and enclose it with Glue gun to make mold spill proof.

Right now I make circular and square shapes that are easy to make .

I use a 3D printer to print mold.

I use ender-3 and PLA material to print .

Use the below parameter for good print.

I attach my 3d print STL file for reference or you can use it as well for 3dprint mold.

If you're not using a 3d printed mold you will cut PVC sheets in any form and stick them on Plastic sheet.

If you use 3d printed mold,First we stick out a 3d printed mold on a plastic sheet using a hot glue gun.

We use clear resin for making the coaster.

First we mix 31 gm of resing and 9 gm of hardener(3:1).

Then we mix sawdust with resin mixture.

Pour it in mold.

Wait 2 hours to harden the resin.(time depends on type of resin.)

After hardened resing you need to remove your product from mold.

Sometimes a 3d printed mold will break while trying to remove resin products.

For PVC mold you just need to remove the outside sheet and retrieve your resing product.

If the edges of the product are not smooth , you need some sending for smooth surfaces.

After smoothing you have the coaster ready to use.
