Save My Seat
Have you ever had to get up for a minute at an event and when you return, someone has taken your seat? Ever sat on a bus stop bench when it was icy cold or covered in raindrops? Gone to an outdoor wedding, and you guessed it, it was raining and all the chairs were soaking wet?
If you answered yes to even one of these questions, then this project is definitely right for you!! Everyone needs one of these, and it is extremely easy to make for almost no cost.
What You Will Need ( Materials)
A ball of yarn. Make sure it is wool, since that contains lanolin and is water resistant and warm.
Knitting Needles. I used circular but straight needles work fine if that is what you prefer.
Scissors
Darning needle
Needle and Thread
Button. I chose a flat button so that it was comfortable to sit on.
Casting on
The number of stitches cast on will vary depending on the yarn, needles used and the size of the space needed to comfortably seat your butt. I cast on 50 stitches.
Knit a Rectangle
Knit in garter stitch until the piece is the desired size. I knit approximately 55 rows.
Add a Loop and a Button
On the inside (wrong side) of the piece add a knitted, braided or crocheted loop near one edge. This loop will secure a plastic food storage bag in a later step.
On the outside (right side) about 2 inches from the edge of the longer side of your rectangle sew on a button. Make sure it is a flat button, small enough to easily pull through the stitches of your knitting.
Insert Your Plastic Food Storage Bag
Roll up a plastic food storage bag and secure it with loop.
Roll It Up and Button It
Roll up your knitted piece. Slip button through stitches to secure it. It should not need a buttonhole if your yarn is chunky and not too tightly knit.
Done!
Now you are ready to try it out. Leave it on your chair at the family reunion dinner to reserve your spot. Take it along to an outdoor event . Pop it in your bag to make sitting on that bus stop bench much more comfortable. I'm pretty sure this is a great idea!!
It is simple, inexpensive enough that if someone steals it, you can easily make a new one, small enough to be easily taken along, attractive enough that you will enjoy using it.
