Sanrio Pompoms

I created pompoms to make three Sanrio characters, and this is one of the three. I chose this activity because I have experience with doing similar things in childhood and I am a long-time fan of Sanrio.

Making the Pompoms

To make a pompom, I used a 3.5 cm pompom maker. I started by wrapping a double-strand (two strands created by using both ends of the yarn bundle) of white yarn around one side (extended and held away from the body of the pompom maker) approximately 75 times, holding the two loose ends together and out of the way with enough excess to tie off the yarn later. Once I had finished wrapping, I cut the yarn and tied it together with the other loose ends, ensuring that the double-knot is secured underneath the wrapped bundle and out of sight. After doing this to the other side of the pompom maker, I closed it up and cut along the center groove of the pompom maker. Finally, wrap a single or double-strand of yarn tightly around the center twice and tie it off.

Remove pompom from pompom maker by lifting the arms and pulling the two halves of the pompom maker apart. Repeat step 2 three times.

Trimming Pompoms

After removing my pompoms from the pompom maker, they must be trimmed down and shaped. The photo attached was taken after trimming the head pompom and attaching felt details. I unfortunately did not take photos of either process.

Making Details

The aforementioned felt details were cut from light blue and pastel pink. I cut tiny oval shaped eyes and a base shape for the mouth from the blue felt. Then, I cut a half-oval shape for the pink inside the mouth, as well as two pink ovals for the cheeks. Glue on details with craft glue.

Gluing Pompoms Together, More Felt Pieces

Use craft glue to stick pompoms together. One pompom should be cut smaller than the rest for the tail. Cut a spiral of blue felt or take a piece of blue string/yarn/thread and glue it onto the tail in a spiral shape. Cut one yellow star and one pink star from felt for extra pizzaz (optional).
