I recently came across a Star Wars cook book that had a recipe for Darth Maul Dip, made from roasted red peppers and Frito corn chips as horns. It really didn't do this assassin any justice so I decided to use the template and create a cake, just in time for Halloween.

In Star Wars Episode l : The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul was the personal apprentice of Darth Sidious, who was sent to eliminate Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn.

Enjoy!

Bake the cake according to manufacturers instructions. Allow cake to cool and place in freezer for 45 minutes. Remove cake from the freezer and place Darth Maul template over cake. Cut around the edges of the template and remove excess pieces of cake. Add 1 teaspoon of red gel paste to white frosting. Stir to combine. Add frosting to cake and spread evenly over surface. Place cake in freezer for another 45 minutes.

To create Darth Maul's horns, break off a small piece of modeling chocolate. Hand form chocolate into shape that resembles horns, with a sharp spiky tip. Repeat process until you have five spiky horns.Allow chocolate horns to set for 30 minutes. Place horns on a paper towel. Spray horns with Wilton Black Mist. Repeat process until desired color is reached. I sprayed my horns between 6 -8 times.

I have provided a tutorial on how to make modeling chocolate in a previous instructable. You can view it here : http://bit.ly/r3ed5E

Create Darth Maul's Eyes

To create Darth Maul's eyes, place 1/8 tsp yellow gel paste into bowl with small piece of modeling chocolate and stir to combine. You may use your hands to knead in the yellow coloring. If the chocolate becomes stiff, place it in the microwave for 15 to 30 seconds on power 5.

Hand form two small eyes and gently place two peppercorns in the middle of each eye for the pupil. Allow chocolate to harden around 15 to 20 minutes. Then pipe small rings around the surface of each eye with red icing.

Decorate Cake

Remove cake from the freezer and place two pieces of parchment paper around doily to catch excess frosting and sanding sugar. Give the cake a final layer of frosting. Generously sprinkle red sanding sugar onto entire surface of cake, so that no signs of frosting remain. Place cake in freezer for 1 hour.

After an hour in the freezer, remove the cake and place the Darth Maul template on top. Sprinkle black sanding sugar over the surface of the template. Carefully remove the template and set aside.

Using a pairing knife, gently remove a small circle of cake where the eyes are to be placed. Press eyes into the cake. The deeper the better. Place a little bit of the left over frosting on the bottom of each horn and press down gently on cake for placement. To complete the cake, using a pairing knife, gently carve around the sides of cake to sculpt the desired look of Darth Maul's face.

Enjoy!
