Soldering electronic components is a 2 handed operation so a device to hold the wires, or electronic components in place is a necessity. This one is simple and cheap to make by hacking a mouse trap. Also, the wire kill bar doubles as a heat sink to protect components like transistors or diodes.

Supplies

You'll need:

A mouse trap (splurge and buy a new one)

A scroll saw

Needle nose pliers

Electrical tape

STRIP DOWN/ MODIFY THE TRAP

Use the pliers to remove the retaining wire and bait holder. These are usually held in place with staples which pull right out. With pliers, bend both arms of the kill bar so it lies flat against the wooden base. This will hold the wires you are soldering tightly against the frame and keep them stationary.

MARK, CUT, SOLDER

Pull the kill bar back and hold it in place temporarily with electrical tape. Mark out a U shape in the kill area then cut it out with the scroll saw. Release the kill bar carefully so it rests over the U cut out. Insert what you want to solder under the kill bar and it will be held steady while you solder. You may want to drill some holes in the base to hold it securely to your work bench.
