SCREECH Potatos!

These are really easy, really fast, really cheap, and really spooky!  Here's the supply list:

potatos (I used yams- for some reason I'm always thinking they're sweet potatos) This would probably work just as well with regular
potatos, and of course real sweet potatos.
mini marshmallows
black food coloring
pastry brush or clean paint brush
standard kitchen equipment

Step 1

The first step is to bake or nuke the potatos (I nuked these- they took 5 min. on high).  Cut them across lengthwise and open them up.

Step 2

The next step is to make some holes along the cut edges for the marshmallows to go.  I used the handle of a fork, but anything (clean!) you have around that's about the size of the minis will do.  Dipping the end in a little cooking oil made it easier.

Step 3

Next, paint the inside of the potato with the black food coloring.  Put some plain water in a small container and add some of the coloring to it- the black is really intense and has to be watered down.

Step 4

Now you can put the marshmallow 'teeth' into the holes you made in the potatos- as a final touch, you can run them under the broiler for a minute to brown the marshmallows and make those teeth really funky!

About the Purple Pasta

To make the spaghetti under the potatos really purple, I used about half purple and half blue food coloring.  By itself, the plain purple food color made the pasta look pinkish, adding the blue did the trick.  It's tossed with a little olive oil.
