  1. Continue to the next step.

Create the Base of the Building

Dome walkthrough_0026_Layer 2.jpg

Instructions

  1. Add a cylinder to the workplane.
  2. Scale the height to 8mm and diameter to 84mm.
  3. Change the color to match the column.

Dome walkthrough_0025_Layer 3.jpg

Make a copy of the base to create the main volume of the building.

Instructions

  1. With the base selected, choose duplicate from the upper left menu.
  2. Scale it's height to 66mm and diameter to 50mm.

  3. Use the black arrow to move the copy so it sits on the base.

Aligning the Column and Building

Dome walkthrough_0024_Layer 4.jpg

The main building and it's base need to be concentric, meaning they share the same center. Then the column will be aligned to one axis of the main building. When finished, you should have something similar to the image.

Instructions

  1. Select the main building and it's base.
  2. Choose the Align tool.
  3. Pick the center tabs on both the X and Y axis.
  4. Select the main building and the column, and choose the Align Tool
  5. Before selecting a tab, left click once on the main building.
  6. Select the center tab on the Y axis.
  7. Move on to the next step.

Duplicate the Column

Dome walkthrough_0023_Layer 5.jpg

Create a duplicate of the column and move it to the opposite side of the dome building.

Instructions

  1. Position the camera to clearly see the column and the opposite side where the copy will be.
  2. Select the column and choose Duplicate.
  3. Hold SHIFT to lock the copy to the axis, and move it to the opposite side.
  4. Move on to the next step.

Duplicating Continues

Dome walkthrough_0021_Layer 7.jpg

The Duplicate tool can record move, rotate, and/or scale actions done to a duplicate object. As long as the selected objects are not deselected, the duplicate tool will apply the amount to next new duplicate.

Instructions

  1. Select both columns.
  2. Choose the Duplciate tool.
  3. Rotate the copies by 22.5 degrees on either the Y or X axis.
  4. Keeping them selected, click the duplicate tool again.
  5. You should have 3 pairs of columns as shown in the image.
  6. Keep the columns selected and move on to the next step.

Create the Remaining Columns

Dome walkthrough_0020_Layer 8.jpg

Instructions

  1. Continue clicking the duplicate button until there is a ring of columns around the dome building.
  2. If the columns are deselected, select the two opposite columns. duplicate them, and rotate 22.5 degrees.
  3. Move on to the next step.

Create the Cap

Dome walkthrough_0019_Layer 9.jpg

Make a copy of the base and keep it concentric with the building.

Instructions

  1. Select the base.
  2. Choose the Duplicate tool.
  3. Use SHIFT to lock it on the Z axis.
  4. Move the cap so it rests on top of the columns.
  5. Move on to the next step.

Make the Second Level

Dome walkthrough_0018_Layer 10.jpg

Make a copy of the main bulding and keep it concentric .

Instructions

  1. Select the main building cylinder.
  2. Choose the Duplicate tool.
  3. Use SHIFT to lock it on the Z axis.
  4. Move the second level so it rests on top of the cap.
  5. Move on to the next step.

Scale the Second Level

Dome walkthrough_0017_Layer 20.jpg

Instructions

1.With the second level cylinder selected, scale it's height to about 25mm.

2. Move on to the next step.

Create a Cap on the Second Level

Dome walkthrough_0016_Layer 21.jpg

Make a copy of the second level, and scale it while keeping it concentric .

Instructions

  1. Select the second level cylinder.
  2. Choose the Duplicate tool.
  3. Hold SHIFT to scale all axis equally and scale the second cap 4mm larger than the second level.
  4. Move on to the next step.

Reposition the Workplane

Dome walkthrough_0015_Layer 13.jpg

The workplane can be aligned to any object's surface with the Workplane Tool. This will let us set the dome right where it needs to go.

Instructions

  1. Press "W" key to switch to Workplane Tool. Notice how the cursor changed.
  2. Place the cursor on top of the second level cap. The white arrow should be pointing up.
  3. Left click on the top surface. The workplane will turn orange and align to that surface. See the image.
  4. Move on to the next step.

Workplane Tool Continued

Instructions

  1. Place a half sphere onto the newly aligned workplane.
  2. Move on to the next step.

Scale the Dome

Dome walkthrough_0013_Layer 15.jpg

Scale the dome while keeping it concentric.

Instructions

  1. Select the dome.
  2. Hold SHIFT to scale all axis equally and scale the dome to have the same diameter as the second level cylinder.
  3. Move on to the next step.

Align Dome and Remove a Column

Dome walkthrough_0012_Shape 1.jpg

Align the dome, having it move towards the main cylinder. Choose a column and remove it. This will become the front entrance of the building.

Instructions

  1. Select the dome and the main building cylinder.
  2. Choose the align tool and left click the building cylinder so the tabs surround it alone.
  3. Click the tabs for X and Y axis only.

  5. Move on to the next step.

Create Hole Shape

Dome walkthrough_0011_Layer 23.jpg

Now that we have the main shape of the building we can add some details to it. Luckily, we can copy the dome and second level (not including the second cap) which will give us a good start.

Instructions

  1. Select the dome and second level cylinder.
  2. Choose the Duplicate tool.
  3. Move them off to the side as shown in the image.
  4. Move on to the next step.

Make the Cylinder Longer

Dome walkthrough_0010_Layer 24.jpg
