Roendi Installation Tutorial
Hey everyone,
In this intractable I will show you how to mount the Roendi encoder on a project box. Hopefully this will give you an idea how this encoder with display can be integrated into your project.
You can get one through my campaign on Crow Supply here. Please subscribe to the mail updates or share the project.
I am looking forward to your questions and comments!
Cheers!
Supplies
- One Roendi encoder
- Hole template
- Marker or a pencil
- Awl or a sharp object
- Drill and drill bits
- Exacto knife
- Philips screwdriver and pair of pliers
What You Will Get in the Box
Roendi will come in a box 9cm x 9cm x 5cm box. Inside you will find one encoder with display, debug cable and adaptor board for ST-LINK/V2 if you choose to use it. Of course you can just use a micro USB cable and program the device using Arduino IDE. This comes down to your preferable development environment.
Disassembly
First thing is to remove the cap of the rotary encoder. It is lightly screw like a bottle cap. Just hold the body of the encoder firmly with one had and turn the cap counterclockwise. It takes a few turns, after this put it somewhere safe.
Disconnecting the Display
Next thing is to disconnect the display. Push on the body of the encoder down. This will leave the PCB and display assembly sticking out, so that you can grab it on the sides and pull it out gently. Disconnect the cable from the board. Grab the body of the encoder and remove it of the encoder as well.
Preparation of the Project Box
First thing is to get the template for drilling. You can located in the GitHub in the reference folder here. Make sure to print it out with Scale set to Actual size. Double check the pattern against the actual encoder to be sure. Once we drill the box we cannot undrill it :) Center the pattern the way you want it.
Drilling
Mark the center of the drill holes using your awl or other suitable sharp object. Remove the template and drill the holes. I am using 3mm drill bit for the mounting holes and 35mm for the shaft hole. 35mm is a bit large, you will need hole not bigger than 30mm. Don't worry if this hole is not perfect or a bit larger. It will get covered by the body of the encoder so that user will not see it. Clean everything with your exacto knife.
Putting Everything Together.
Put the encoder through hole and secure it with bolts and nuts. From this point on the process of assembly is the same as disassembly but in reverse order. Put the body of the encoder first. Connect the display cable to the main PCB and gently insert the display into the encoder. Adjust the height of the encoder body and screw the cap and you are DONE!
