Rock Troll/stone Faces

Hello Instructables!
In this instructable I am going to show you how to sculpt some Rock Trolls. They are simple and fun to make, dont require any specialist equipment and can go outside to brighten up your garden (or leave them tucked away to surprise people)

Materials.

Granite fimo or any other stone coloured polymer clay.

White polymer clay (this is optional to make eyes but you can do it without)

Tinfoil.

Tools

A surface to work on

Something pointy (like a pencil or toothpick)

An Oven

Additional but not necessary tools
A rolling pin or smooth glass bottle to help roll it flat

Some water or wet wipes to help smooth the surface (they are also hand for cleaning your hands)

Take some tinfoil and roll it into a ball roughly the size of a tangerine and separate 2 thirds of your polymer clay if using a 57g block.
Keep 1 third to the side for later and flatten out the other 2 thirds.

Wrap it around your tin foil ball

Take a small part of your left over fimo and shape it into a nose shape. this can be any shape you want, big and round, long and thin. Once in place smooth of the edges to make sure its properly attached the the "head"

For the nostrils make two small balls and press them against the side of the nose. You can use the tip of a pencil or toothpick to make the "nose holes" but also help attach the nostrils.

For the mouth roll out a snake of clay. If you taper the edges it will blend on to the face easier.
Place it where you want the mouth to be and blend/smooth the lower edge into the face.

To give it more definition/cheeks you can add a couple of small snakes from the nostrils to the corners of the mouth and blend the edge towards where the eyes will be.

You can also add a bit here to give it more of a chin.

IMPORTANT! You may want to give your hands a wash before you start handling the white as you may get some discolouration.

Simply make to balls and put them in place.

Use your pencil/toothpick to make pupils/irises

Tomake some eye lids make 4 small snakes.
Place one below the eye and blend the points at the end in.
Repeat with one over the top of the eye (if you overlap the lower lid a bit it looks a bit more realistic.....well, as realistic as a small stone face can be)

repeat for the other eye

Pretty much the same as you did for the lip but in the opposite direction.

Make a snake, place it above the eyes.
Shape it into the expression you want

Smooth/blend the upper edge.

You van also add smaller snake above this to look like a forehead wrinkle.

Now its ready to be baked as per your polymer clay's instructions.

And you are done!

As these are made from polymer clay they can live quite happily outside so why not go out and brighten your garden (or someone else's day by putting them someplace unexpected)
