Rock Garden
This is a tutorial on creating a Rock Garden.
Supplies
Edging
Weedblock
River Rock
Accent Rocks (optional)
Stepping Stones (optional)
Location & Preparation
- Select the space where you want to add your Rock Garden
- Clear the space of all vegetation
- Outline your space with edging
- Lay down the weedblock
Rocks, Rocks & More Rocks
If you have a large space to fill, it's best to order your rock from a local dealer and have it delivered. If your space is small, you may be able to find it at your local garden center and pick it up yourself.
- Estimate the square footage of your space (example: 450 square feet)
- Estimate the depth of your rock garden (example: 4 inches or 1/3 foot)
- Divide Square Footage by 3 to get Cubic Feet (450/3 = 150 cubic feet)
- Divide Cubic Feet by 27 to get Cubic Yards (150/27 = 5.5) [ A Cubic Yard of Rock weighs about 1-1.5 tons ]
- Unload the rock in a location convenient to where your Rock Garden will be
Filling the Rock Garden
Now comes the fun part 😊 - Move the Rock from the unloaded rock pile to the Rock Garden!
We used a garden cart because it was more stable than a wheel barrow, but your transport mechanism is your choice.
Fill in your Rock Garden making sure not to leave any blank spaces, but also not too deep, so you will have enough rocks for your project.
Accent Rocks
When you have completed your new Rock Garden, decide if you want to add any Accent Rocks. I just happened to have a few so I outlined my new Rock Garden with them!
Leftover Rocks
If you have any leftover rocks, follow the same process to create another Rock Garden. We had a few, so we created another Rock Garden behind the pool!
Even More Leftover Rocks
So, I guess we overestimated the square footage of the first Rock Garden. Many plants froze in the "Texas freeze of 2021", so we cleared out that area and made a pathway across the flower bed.
The Real Rock Garden
I'm a true Rockhound and have gone rock hunting in Texas, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. Remember all those crates full of Rock in the Rock Dumping picture? Well, those rocks are now in their very own Rock Garden! I am now able to enjoy the beauty of all my rocks in my multiple Rock Gardens!
