In the image above, you'll be constructing a robotic hand.

Supplies

Tech supplies list.jpg

Supplies that will be needed are:

  • Styrofoam
  • Rubber bands
  • Marker
  • Fishing wire
  • Paper clips
  • X-acto knife
  • Scissors
  • Pliers
  • Needle

Measurements

When first constructing your robotic hand you want to make sure that all your measurements are accurate so your robotic hand functions properly, First find yourself a model, Using a model instead of eyeballing it is a much safer option because your more likely to get your wanted results, Then, place the models hand on the Styrofoam, gently trace out the shape of there forearm and palm, After that then trace out the fingers as well by measuring the length of the models fingers. Note: Make sure you get the right dimensions!!

Cutting

While tracing the shape of the forearm, palm, and fingers then you start cutting the pieces our. Once finished cutting the pieces out, you can then start shaving them down into the proper form. Shave the fingers into round cylinders, Once finished shaving them down, you can cut them into three pieces. Line the cylinder with the models fingers and cut them where each lines on their fingers end. Next, take the top piece of the finger and cut it again. This time though, cut it on a 45 degree angle. Do the same on all fingers.

Assembling and Sewing

After completing cutting out all your pieces, start assembling your fingers to connect to the arm.

  1. Get a sewing needle.
  2. Thread the fishing wire through the needle Make sure to tie a knot at the end.
  3. Poke the needle through all three pieces.
  4. Once done poking pieces through, poke the needle through the actual arm itself.
  5. Pull the string down and make sure it reaches the end of the forearm
  6. Then take the rubber bands and cut them into small pieces
  7. After that, take the rubber bands and hot glue them onto the gaps in between the cuts on the finger making sure that they are in place and secure.
  8. Finally glue the top of the fingers so the string doesn't come lose
  9. Repeat these steps on the other fingers

Coding

After assembling your hand, start working on your codes. For this assignment, two codes are needed from different courses. The main focus will be the the tech code.

  1. First start by downloading your code from the hub onto Arduino

Adding Servos

IMG_0468.jpg

Once finished with the codes, add on the servos. First start off by cutting a small hole onto the bottom part of the hand. Then place the servo into the hole and check if it fits. Once the servo is in proper place, grab a hot glue gun and glue it into place. After that, take the finger (s) that your using and pull the strings and pull the string through the arm since the servo should be glued down on the forearm.

Testing the Hand

Once finished crafting and coding you robotic hand, check if all the success criteria is reached. Fr example, being able to pinch things, moving on its own, etcs.
