What better way to celebrate the Instructables Robot’s birthday than with a cake…a crochet cake! This playful project combines my love of crochet with a whimsical design that captures the charm of the mascot. Using soft, chunky yarn, you’ll create a squishy amigurumi cake that looks just like the robot—complete with antennas, a cheerful face, and even a “20” to mark this special occasion.

Beginner-friendly and quick to work up thanks to chunky yarn, this project makes a perfect decoration or cuddly keepsake. Follow the step-by-step instructions, and by the end you’ll have your very own plush robot cake to show off. Let’s get crocheting!

Supplies

(All yarn is chunky/super bulky unless stated otherwise)

  1. Yellow – Main Body/Cake
  2. Black – Side antennas, Mouth, Unibrow, Base Stripe, Number 20
  3. Red – Icing, Ears, Eye Rings
  4. Gray – Robot Buttons and Candles
  5. Orange – Candle Flames
  6. Black worsted weight yarn – Embroidered control box

Crochet Hook: Size 8 mm (or size recommended for your chunky yarn).

Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill (plenty—chunky yarn projects need more).

30 mm safety eyes

Large Tapestry Needle

Stitch Markers (Optional but helpful for keeping track of rounds. I generally just use a small piece of yarn as I find it to be much faster and simpler.)

Scissors

White paint marker

Abbreviations:

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

inc – increase (2 sc in the same stitch)

st(s) – stitch(es)

BO – bobble stitch

Note on Bobble Stitches: For this project, each bobble stitch is made with 3 double crochets (dc) in the same stitch, not 5 as in a standard bobble.
