Robot Arm Accessory Sajan J

We will be working to produce a working, moving robotic arm with options for a counterweight on the opposite side. This will allow the robotic arm to withstand heavier weighted items whilst functioning better. It is built with an attachment that allows the user to add whatever modification whether it is a gripper, a pusher, or many other things connected to the head of the arm.

Supplies

Material list:

  • 1 servo
  • 1 Arduino uno board
  • 16screws (9 medium lengths 1 long 6 short ) [the holes for the screws are 3mm wide]
  • 16 nuts
  • 3d printed pieces
  • 1 connector to the servo, 1 base, 2 arms, 1 shield/connector face, 1 joint
  • 1 previously produce bot
  • 3D printer
  • Servo knob (the one with two long ends, one facing up, the other facing down, image will be displayed further on)

Optional:

  • 3D printing software, ie Fusion360
  • Cura Ultimaker software
  • Both these incase you would like to modify and optimize the pieces

Printing the Pieces

This is the compilled version of all the parts neccessary to produce this project. I will also provide individual files so if one would like they can modify and optimizie the pieces for their own liking.

Wiring the Servo

For the arm to actually work, the servo has to be up and running. To ensure this, we will plugin and test the servo before beginning to produce and put together the attachment robot arm. To do this we will need to plug in the three pins of the servo into the G V S slots on the 10 pins. The orange wire on the servo will plug into the white terminal on pin 10. The brown wire will plug into the black terminal on pin 10. The red wire will plug into the red terminal on pin 10. Once connected to the robot, ensure your robot is connected to your dabble remote via your device and test out the servo movement.

Steps:

  • Orange wire to white terminal on pin 10
  • Brown wire to black terminal on pin 10
  • Red wire to red terminal on pin 10

Putting It Together

To put together this arm there are many steps that must be followed to ensure success.


Steps:

  1. All pieces must be printed out successfully in order to be able to put together

Attaching the Arms to the Base

After printing and/or modifying the pieces provided, it is time to start assembling the attachment.

Steps:

  1. You will need to find the Base, this is the large pieces with a slot for the servo and holes to bolt down. An image of this piece will be displayed above.
  2. You will need to locate the two attachment arms, these are 2 long, identical pieces that have 10 holes for attachment purposes. An image of this will also be provided.
  3. Now you will need to grab two of the medium length screws as well as two nuts two hold them tightly.
  4. Before screwing on the pieces, ensure that the arms are attached through the front side, the side with the piece extending out on the bottom with the 14 screw holes.
  5. Now you must screw through the first hole on the circular end of the long piece and further screw it into 1 of the two holes on the large face of the base. There are two designated holes 10mm away from each other that are allotted for the arm pieces.
  6. Next you will screw in the other arm with the same process.
  7. Once the arms are screwed in, you will tighten them on with nuts to ensure they do not fall off while in movement.

Attaching the Servo to the Base

After attaching the arms to the base, it is time to attach the servo to the base.

Steps:

  1. Grab your servo, two screws, and two nuts.
  2. You have to fit the servo into the large rectangle on the base. You want the moving knob piece to be facing the direction of the holes.
  3. Once held snugly in, you are going to screw two medium screws through the servo further attaching it to the base.

Attaching the Servo to a Mount Piece

For this, we will be attaching a long piece of plastic to the servo through the plastic knob that is attached to the servo.

Steps:

  1. You will need to grab your base with the servo and arms attached, two short length screws, two nuts, and the long attaching piece that has been prints. This is the piece with two thick ends and a thinner inside to allow screws to more easily glide through the servo. This piece will be displayed above to ensure you are using the correct one.
  2. We initially have to screw 2 screws through the plastic knob and the plastic arm printed. Once connected, fasten with nuts.
  3. After this we will horizontally attach the knob to the servo. This knob will be attached to the long arm piece.

Attaching the Shield/face to the Mount Arms

For this, we will be attaching the face piece to the servo arms that are already connected to the base.

Steps:

  1. For this, we need to grab the face piece, two medium screws, and two nuts.
  2. First things first, we need to straighten the two arms as best as we can horizontally, this has no change on how it is put together it just makes it easier to screw in.
  3. We will then proceed onto attaching the face to the arms,
  4. We will put the face on the front side of the arms.
  5. We will then ensure that the screw holes are facing the arms whilst the face of the shield is facing the opposite direction. Image will be displayed
  6. Then we will screw in two medium screws, one in the top arm and one in the bottom arm.
  7. Then fasten these screws with nuts to ensure the best hold.

Attaching the Connector Piece Between the Servo and the Arms

For this, we will be using the short plastic piece with a cylinder coming out one side of it.

Steps:

  1. Grab the plastic plastic piece explained above, two long screws, and two nuts.
  2. Take the cylinder part of the plastic piece, and hold it onto the second last whole of the bottom arm.
  3. Screw it in and fasten it to the arm piece.
  4. Next we will have to connect to the the servo mount piece.
  5. Now we will take the other end of the piece, and screw it into the sixth hole from the right on the servo mount. This will ensure that the arm can move smoothly whilst not hitting the walls of the not too early or too late.
  6. Fasten both the screws in ensuring that they are tightly secure.

Final Attachment, Attach to Your Bot!

This is the final step with producing the actual accessory.

Steps:

  1. Take your fully built arm, remaining screws, and nuts and choose where you would like to attach your arm onto your bot.
  2. Take your screws and screw your arm accessory into your bot through the designated holes built into the accessory base

Congratulations, you have successfully created a robotic accessory arm for your bot!

The only thing left to do is test your final product. Ensure that all your pieces are pout together and screwed in tightly. As well make sure that your servo is working. Before attaching the mount to the servo, turn it on and let the servo set to the middle, it will rotate around a bit once turned on setting it to the center. Now you can attach the mount to the servo and use it with your bot!
