Robo is a domestic robot that uses 2025 artificial intelligence and advanced soft robotics technology. This combination delivers users with a holistic and highly compelling personal assistant. Eight years into the future sees the replacement of passive, data heavy screens such as phones and tablets with highly advanced, intuitive alternatives. Robo is a companion that interacts with family members and domestic smart devices as part of a seamless service. Robo influences the home and its occupants directly and indirectly. As such, direct assistance includes turning on and off appliances like lights and heating in response to the user’s location and energy requirements. Robo seeks to optimise and manage the home’s energy demands indirectly by comparing calculated energy forecasts for grid renewables and household energy requirement. For example suggesting to users to wait two days to do the laundry, when the weather is good enough to hang clothes outside, instead of using a tumble dryer. As well as monitoring energy, Robo aims to assist the personal and interpersonal well-being of family members. Meaningful interactions range from reminding occupants pay their utility bills to teaching french. In order to counter natural suspicion relating to AI developments and connotations of mechanized dystopias, Robo has a fabric covered body and operates using ‘soft robotic’ technology. Robo is static, only able to balance himself and wiggle a little when speaking. It is the user who moves him around the house. This puts the user in a position of ownership, allowing them to use or leave Robo as and when they wish. Robo is a speculative home assistant thoroughly equipped to deal with 2025.
