This origami bag is a super fun project for anybody, at any level, who knows how to sew. It is a great sewing project for beginners, as you only have to sew straight lines and it is fun to see the result. There are infinite color combinations to try and multiple uses for this bag. Hope your bag turns out amazing! Enjoy!

Supplies

  • Fabric
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine

Cut Fabric

Cut a piece of fabric into a strip 12.5 inches wide and 36.5 inches long.

Fold Fabric

Lay the fabric down horizontally. Fold the bottom right corner to the top of the fabric, making a triangle shape. Then, fold the top left corner to the bottom of the fabric to make a triangle shape (Refer to pictures above). Next, fold the entire triangle that has been folded down, up to cover the middle (Refer to pictures above).

Pin Fabric

Position the bag you have just folded so that the points are facing away from you. Next, pin the fabric together, from the bottom right corner up to the middle about half an inch from the edge. Flip the fabric over carefully, points facing away from you, and repeat.

Sew Fabric

Now it is time to sew! Starting from the middle, sew towards the corner, taking the pins out as you go. Sew about 1/4 inch from the edge. Once you reach the corner, take the fabric off the machine. Then, flip the fabric over and repeat the same steps on the other side.

Repeat

Repeat steps one through four with a different fabric if you want the finished product to be reversible. Otherwise, repeat steps one through four with the fabric you already used.

Combine the Bags

Place one of the bags you made inside of the other bag. MAKE SURE that the sewed sides of the bag are visible on the inside and outside of the combined bag (Refer to picture). This ensures that when you turn it inside out, the right/clean sides of the bag will be visible.

Pin Bags Together

Where the edges of the bag meet, pin them together. Make sure you pin the entire border of the bag.

Now, go around the edge where the bags meet and sew it together. BUT, you must leave SOME SPACE UNSEWN, about 2.5 inches. This is so you can turn it inside out, so make sure you leave a spot unsewn!! I would recommend choosing a spot near one of the corners.

Turn Inside Out

Through the hole that is left in the space that you didn't sew, turn your bag inside out. Make sure that there are no pins left because you DO NOT want to sew in a pin.

If you turn it inside out and it looks strange, don't worry! Simply put one of the fabric colors inside the other fabric and the bag shape will become apparent.

Sew the Hole

You are so close! All you have to do now is find the hole in the fabric you used to turn the bag inside out. Sew that gap closed and you are finished!

Reversing and Finish!

Great job, now you can use your bag!

Reversing your bag changes which color is on the outside and which is on the inside. Reversing your bag is simple. Reach your hands into the bag and grab the inside corners, then pull them fully out. Your bag is reversed! I hope you enjoyed this project and that your bag turned out amazing! Thank you!
