Reversible Octopus Amigurumi

Make a crocheted reversible octopus! This little critter has two different faces/personalities. To make him you will need to know how to do a magic ring, single crochet, increase, and invisible decrease. Here are tutorials for these stitches:

Pattern notes:

• This pattern is worked in the round, so it is important that you do not join at the end of your rounds. Using a stitch marker is essential and will make keeping track of your stitches so much easier!
• Count your stitches at the end of each row to make sure you have the right amount. It is so much easier to count at the end of each row than it is to realize you made a mistake a few rows back and have to rip out your stitches.
• Abbreviations:

• Two different colors of super bulky yarn (I used Baby Blue-Green, and Teal Dreams from Bernat Baby Blanket)
• Black yarn (for the mouth)
• Felt (for the eyes)
• Black and white thread (to sew the eyes)
• 8mm crochet hook
• Stitch markers
• Yarn needle
• Sewing needle
• Scissors
• Pins (These are optional but they can make sewing on the eye
• Poly fill or stuffing of your choice

Make one in each color of super bulky yarn:

Row 1: 6 sc in mr (6 sts)

Row 2: inc in each st (12 sts)

Row 3: (sc in next st, inc in next st) 6 times (18 sts)

Row 4: (sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st) 6 times (24 sts)

Row 5: (sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st) 6 times (30 sts)

Row 6: (sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st) 6 times (36 sts)

Row 7: (sc in next 5 sts, inc in next st) 6 times (42 sts)

Row 8: (sc in next 6 sts, inc in next st) 6 times (48 sts)

Row 9-18: sc in each st around (48 sts)

Leave long tail for sewing and fasten off.

Cut out four white circles of felt for the whites of the eyes. This will be the base, so the shape doesn't really matter for the facial expression. For the pupils, I cut out two circles and two tear drop shapes from black felt. You can change these shapes based on how you want your octopus to look! You could try experimenting with squares, ovals, triangles, semi-circles, diamonds, etc. to get the expression and look you want.

Once you have your pieces cut out, place the black shapes on the white ovals and sew them in place with black thread and a sewing needle. If you don't have black you could use a really dark blue or purple. (It just needs to be dark enough that you won't really notice it.) Once the eyes are sewn together, you can pin them to the head(s) and sew them in place with white thread and a sewing needle. If you don't have white, you could use a really light tan or cream color.

Use black yarn and a yarn needle to sew on the mouth. Once again, be creative with this! It's your octopus, so make it how you want it.

Make four in each color:

Row 1: 6 sc in a mr (6 sts)

Row 2: inc in each st (12 sts)

Row 3: (sc in next st, inc in next st) 6 times (18 sts)

Row 4: (sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st) 6 times (24 sts)

Row 5-6: sc in each st around (24 sts)

Row 7: (sc in next 2 sts, invis dec in next st) 6 times (18 sts)

Row 8: (sc in next st, invis dec in next st) 6 times (12 sts)

Row 9-10: sc in each st around (12 sts)

Leave long tail for sewing and fasten off.

Stuff each leg with poly fill or stuffing and sew the top closed with tail.

Sew the legs together first in groups of two. Use the tail from one leg to sew it to the other leg. (I used the whip stitch) Once you have four groups of two, use the tail from one group to sew it to another group of the same colors.

Now you should have four legs of one color sewn together and four legs of the other color sewn together. Sew these two groups to each other so they are on opposite sides. This will be important when we sew the head on the legs! Now all your legs should be sewn in a circle.

Secure the tails of your yarn so the stitches won't come apart and cut them so they are no longer attached to the legs.

Turn one piece inside out so the face is on the inside. Put this piece inside the other piece so the wrong sides are together. Make sure the faces are on opposite sides of the head! This is super important if you want the face to line up with the correct color of feet. Sew the head together with yarn and a yarn needle. Once you are finished, secure the yarn so the stitches won't come out. Cut the yarn and weave in the tail.

Now you can flip your head inside out to change faces!

Take the legs and line it up with the correct color of face. You want the legs that are the same color to be in front and the different colored legs to be in the back. This way when you flip your octopus, the legs in the back will line up with the other face. Sew the legs to the head of your octopus using yarn and a yarn needle. You will need a lot more yarn than you thing you need! Once the legs are secure, fasten the end of your yarn so the stitches don't come out. Cut your yarn. If you leave a small tail you will need to weave it in.
