Reversible Knit Capelet/Poncho
I love the idea of knitting my own sweaters--especially this time of year--but I'm not quite ready skill-level-wise to take on that challenge. This capelet/poncho was completely doable, however.
You'll need to know some intermediate knitting techniques (or you can look them up on YouTube and learn them)--namely, knit 2 together (k2tog) and yarn over (YO).
Let's get started!

Let's get started!
Materials Needed
Yarn Selection
Any yarn will do, but I love chuckier yarns because they make any knitting project go by faster. I used Lion Brand Super Bulky yarn in this beautiful purple. I needed 2.5 skeins for a poncho/capelet of this length.
Needle Selection
Follow the package for needle size. You can go larger but never smaller. I used size 17, 36-inch circular needles.
Other Materials
2 place markers.
24- to 28-inch circular needles
Measuring tape

Creating the Body of the Capelet/Poncho
Cast On
Begin by measuring the circumference of the widest part of your shoulders. Determine how many stitches to cast on using the gauge instructions on the yarn packaging.
I had to cast on 84 stitches on the 32-inch circular needles.
Make sure you cast on an even number of stitches.
Place Markers
Place one marker at the beginning of the row and the other exactly halfway through.
The Stitch
I'm not sure if this stitch has a name, but I started using it two years ago, and it is hands-down my favorite.
Knit 1 * Yarn over (YO), Knit 2 together (K2tog). Repeat from * until the last stitch before each marker. Knit 1.
Repeat until the body of the poncho/capelet is 8 inches in length (or longer if you prefer).
(See the second picture for the pretty pattern this stitch creates!)

Create the Neckline
I opted for a simple crewneck, but if you prefer a turtleneck, simply repeat the final step until you have a turtleneck of the length of your liking.
Decrease Around Markers to Create Shoulders
Knit 2 together (K2tog) six times (taking 12 stitches down to 6) after and before each marker until your original number of stitches has been halved. (I started with 84 stitches and decresed down to 42.)
Neckline Stitch
Again, make sure you're working with an even number of stitches at this point. If you have an odd number, simply yarn over (YO) once to create the extra needed stitch.
Knit 2, Purl 2 (repeat until you have the desired length of your crew- or turtleneck).
Bind off, TURN INSIDE-OUT, try on, and enjoy!
