Reusable Sandwich Bags
Growing up, I would use zip-lock bags constantly. For breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner. This summer, I noticed that at the beach I would constantly use ziplock bags but wasn't thinking about the impact it has on our environment. When I thought of a solution for this problem, I instantly thought of making a reusable ziplock bag that you are able to re-use constantly and is washable. Today, I am going to show you how to make a simple, reusable, washable, and long lasting sandwich bag.
What you will need:
- Food safe fabric (Joan Fabrics has many food-safe fabrics!)
- Fabric scissors
- Fabric pins
- Fabric chalk or a pencil
- Velcro strips (3 1/2 " by 3/4 ")
- Ruler
- Sewing Machine (Can be hand sewn but would just be sturdier if you use a sewing machine)
- Thread
Measuring
You are going to be need two pieces of fabric, each should be 11" by 16". Using a pencil or a piece of fabric chalk measure out where you need to cut out.
Cut the Fabric
Cut along the markings on the fabric that you have to get the shape.
Pin
Now that you have cut out the two pieces of fabric, place one on-top of the other one, lining up the edges. Once the edges are lined up pin the sides down. Leave one side open.
Sew
Head over to your sewing machine now and sew along the pins. Make sure to leave a 5/8" border.
Flip Inside Out
Once you have sewn all of the three sides, flip the fabric inside out.
Closing the Fabric
With the fourth side that is still open you are going to fold each of its side toward the inner fabric. With it folded you are going to line up its edges with the fabric that is directly across from it and pin it together. That way there will be no loose fabric pieces getting into your food.
Sew
Again, sew along the pins. For this side you do not need a 5/8" border, I suggest getting as close to the edge as possible.
Pin
Now that you have sewn the fourth side. You are going to bring the end of the rectangle shape and bring it about 3/4 of the way up to the top of the rectangular shape. Saving about 1/4 of the fabric left at the top. Pin down the sides up till the 3/4 way mark.
Sew
Sew down the pieces you have pinned together. Try and get as close to the edge as you can, no need for a 5/8" border.
Last Step!
Now that you have sewn the last pieces together you are going to add your velcro. Velcro the top of the pocket and the top of its fold over.
Enjoy!
