Replacing the Valve Cover Gasket for Hyundai Trajet 2000.

The engine in this Hyundai trajet 2000 has been losing oil fast and looks grimy. The issue is a leaky cable cover gasket. Here is how I replaced it.

Removing the Coil Packs and Spark Plug Wires.

The coil packs are held by four 10mm bolts. The electrical connectors also needed to be disconnected over the engine. As you can see the coil packs and spark plug wires are in a bad state. These will be replaced.

Unbolting the Valve Cover.

The valve cover is held by thirteen 10mm bolts. Also two 10mm bolts on the Timing Belt Upper cover need to be removed.

Disconnecting the Pcv Valve Vacuum Line.

The pcv valve hose needed to be removed but I plan to replace the valve and hose anyhow.

Lifting the Cover.

Using a large flatblade screwdriver I pried the cover up and off.

Visual Inspection.

The Timing Belt is free of oil contamination and the teeth visible seem OK. This belt is scheduled to be replaced at the end of the year.

Cleaning the Cover.

Since the cover looked so grimy I degreased, cleaned it and scrubbed as best as I could.

Replacing the Gasket.

See the old gasket? Blah. The new gasket slotted in easily and I used liquid gasket at the corners of the gasket. I let it cure for 20 minutes before reassembly into the engine.

Placing the Cover Back.

OK here is the valve cover back in place with brand new gasket.

Putting Back the Electricals.

Coil packs and wires were reinstalled.

Tightening and Completion.

The pcv valve vacuum line was installed. The bolts were gradually tightened in an alternating pattern to 10Nm.
