Replacing a Trailer Coupler

Hitches can break for a number of reasons. They are easily replaced however, so don’t fret. The one pictured has no locking mechanism.

Gather your tools

1. 2 wrenches Or 2 sockets Or a combination of one of each
2. WD40

Locate your trailer hitch and size the nuts and bolts to make sure you have a wrench/socket large enough.

Size the replacement bolts at this time if you have them. You might be able to reuse the ones you have, but you really don't know until you remove the existing ones and inspect them.

Remove the old bolts and nuts

You may need to add some lubricant to help remove the bolts, such as WD40

Inspect the hardware to see if they can be reused or need to replaced

Be sure and keep the chain, as that does not come with most replacement hitches

The nut pictures has some remnants of blue lock tight from its initial installation. Other than that, it is in great shape. I can't say the same thing about the bolts, however.

When putting your new hitch back on, be sure to run the chain through the bolt farthest from the trailer. This makes your chain long enough to reach your receiver and hook for towing.
