Renault Trafic Nissan NV300 Vauxhall Vivaro Rear Security Shield - UPDATED VERSION

Symptoms of Fault
If you have already had a break-in then it is likely you will have a hole drilled in the rear door of your vehicle.
The Problem
It is very common for thieves to attempt break-ins on these vans by drilling a hole through the rear door to access the internal mechanisms of the lock and open the door, thus being able to take whatever is stored in the back of the van. If your van has been broken into, the usual resolution is to replace the whole door, which is very expensive and can be difficult to source.
You may even need to spray the door to match your van. If you are looking for a deterrent, a common solution is an alarm system. These are also expensive and may not deter a thief- by the time the alarm goes off they might already be in the van and stealing your tools!
Vehicles Affected
Renault Trafic 2014 - 2018
Nissan NV300 2014 - 2021
Vauxhall Vivaro 2014 - 2018
Our Solution
This X8R kit contains everything you need to repair a past break-in, as well as protect it from future attacks.
Rather than replace your door or install an expensive alarm system, install the X8R Door Lock Shield Kit. This comprehensive kit will deter thieves from breaking into your vehicle by adding two extra layers of protection to your door. Our kit is also suitable if your van has been previously drilled in to.
Our external and internal shields are both made from 2.5mm stainless steel. Adding 5mm stainless steel protection, the skin of most OEM doors is little over 1mm thick!
Our shields come with a closed cell foam gasket which sits flush between the door & the exterior shield, creating a water-tight protective barrier to prevent rust and corrosion.
Template included to allow accurate drilling and easier install. Please also check out our comprehensive instruction document and install video.
High quality brushed stainless steel finish.

Supplies
You will need:
- Trim removal tool
- Stanley blade
- Centre punch
- Marker pen (optional)
- Masking tape
- Electric drill plus 3mm, 5mm and 7mm drill bits
- Surface spray & cloth
- Paint pen or touch up kit
- Wax oil
- 10mm deep socket and rachet
- 10mm rachet spanner
- Super glue/silicone/glue dots

Remove the interior door handle, do so by removing the screw in the centre of the door handle and gently pulling it off the lever mechanism.

Remove the door card by pressing a trim removal tool around the outside of the card. The diagram above shows the locations of the plastic lugs holding on the door card.
If your door has an internal membrane remove this with a Stanley blade. Do so carefully. At the end of the installation you would want to reinstall this skin for sound insulation.

Shift the metal catch to the left in order to release the handle cover. Remove the exterior handle (both sections).

Drill out the rivet.

Move the main body out of the way, and disconnect the clips that fasten the wrapped cable to the door skin.

Using a screwdriver, or a pry tool, pop off the round black plastic handle.

Using a T40 Torx Bit, remove the 3 screws holding in the locking unit. Then remove the locking unit. Unplug the red electrical connector from the top of the locking unit.

Place masking tape on the area of the door where the guard will be installed. Place a small amount of grease on the back of the paper template. Place the template on the door. The grease allows the template to stick to the door and be moved around.

Use a punch on the centre points on the template. If you do not have a punch you can use a screw bit and a hammer. Lift off the corners of the template to look at the punch marks, if they are faint you can dot them with a marker to make them more obvious. Remove the template.

Using a 3mm drill bit, drill pilot holes on each punch mark. The three holes on the outermost edge of the door should go through two skins of the door, the exterior and interior skin of the door.

Open up the holes to 7mm. We used a 5mm then 7mm drill bit sizes

Remove the masking tape and offer up the guard to the door. Clean up any swarf by wiping down the surface of the door. Check that the guard fits snuggly in the drilled holes, if it does not then you can open up the holes to a maximum of 8mm.

Take the 19mm holesaw and drill it into the three holes on the interior of the door – ONLY drill the interior skin and do not go through to the exterior skin.

Clean up any swarf from the door. Use a paint pen or touch-up kit to go over the drilled holes. Wait for it to dry. Then go over with a good quality wax oil spray. This prevents rust. Make sure to do both of these steps on the holesaw holes as well as the exterior holes.

Place the foam gasket over the outer door shield and press into the door.

Firstly press on the washers on the studs protruding from the holesaw holes. Then install the Nyloc nuts using a 10mm deep socket and rachet.
Do not over tighten the nuts, this can cause the studs to snap. Tighten the nuts until the door, gasket and exterior shield are flush with each other. If you cannot see the gasket or it looks squashed, you have overtightened the nuts.

Slot the inner guard over the top of studs.

On each stud press on a stainless steel washer then hand tighten a Nyloc nut over the top, we found it easiest to do this stud-by-stud to keep the inner guard from moving. Tighten the nuts with a 10mm adjustable head rachet spanner. Again, do not over tighten the nuts, this can cause the studs to snap.

If you are fitting the lock mechanism guard:
Fit the lock mechanism guard by pushing it into the door frame. Do it exactly as the photo shows. This is the fiddliest part of the installation. Hold this in place with one hand whilst pushing the lock mechanism into the guard. Refit the original screws to hold it all in place.
If you are not fitting the lock mechanism guard:
Push the lock mechanism into its original position and screw it back in place.

Reinstall the round black handle.
Offer up the main handle body from the inside and hold it in place whilst installing a new rivet in place of the one that you removed earlier, making sure that the rivet grips onto the plastic handle body.

Replace the handle by inserting the hinged side in first, and then levering back into place.
Once the handle is installed you can replace the handle cover, now slide the metal latch back into its locked position so that the handle is secured in place.

If your vehicle had an internal membrane, this should be reattached with superglue, gluedots or silicone.
Reinstall the door card by pressing the lugs back into the door.
This completes the repair. If you need any further guidance on this install or would like to purchase the parts shown please call us on +44 01843 446643 or email us at sales@x8r.co.uk.
