Renault ABS Sensor Plate 40mm & 45mm

Symptoms of the fault

ABS light on dashboard, rusted or disintegrated ABS plate, ABS sensor hanging loose. Sometimes the plate is rusted away to the point where it is completely missing.

The problem

The ABS plates that sit over the wheel hub corrode and disintegrate over time, thus reducing the connectivity to the ABS sensor and generating an ABS fault code. These plates are not available to buy separately as they are built into the rear axle and Renault garages will charge over £1000 for a new axle plus labour. Even scrap yards are not willing to sell the plates separately as they can make more money selling the complete axles.

Our solution

Our ABS plates are a much more cost-effective solution to this common and simple issue. We have designed & created our own plates out of marine grade stainless steel to prevent any corrosion like the original unit. They also have two indents for spot welds, this is because the knuckle itself may have surface corrosion, affecting a secure fit for the new ABS plate, if this is the case then you can spot weld it into place so the ABS sensor does not become lose.

You will receive

1 or 2 x ABS Plate made of marine grade stainless steel

You will need:

• Small & large flat head screwdrivers or chisels
• Hammer
• Wire brush
• Penetrating spray

You may need:

• Blow torch or heat gun
• Spot welder

Remove the wheels, brake caliper & disc from the vehicle to expose the steering knuckle & spindle where the original ABS plate is (or was, if the plate has disintegrated). Remove the ABS sensor from the plate if necessary.

Apply the penetrating spray generously to the plate and leave to soak for 1-2 hours. This will loosen the plate and make it easier to remove.

Using the flat head screwdrivers/chisel & hammer, start tapping around the outside of the plate. Be sure to go around the whole circumference. We found it easier to start with a larger screwdriver and then go in with a smaller screwdriver after.

Once the plate is completely loose, remove it from the spindle.

If you are struggling to remove the original plate, you can use a blow torch or heat gun to aid the process. It may be stuck firmly due to the corrosion on the knuckle & plate.

Using a wire brush, brush down the knuckle & spindle area of any surface corrosion. Try to be as thorough as possible so the new plate can fit flush to the knuckle.

Place the new ABS plate over the spindle, ensuring the connector for the sensor is in the correct position. The new plate should fit flush & firmly to the knuckle. If it doesn't, we recommend using a spot welder to join it to the spindle. There are two cut outs on the centre of the new plate specifically for spot welding (if necessary).

Connect the ABS sensor to the connector on the new plate and rebuild the vehicle. The car may need to be plugged into a diagnostic machine to clear the ABS fault on the dashboard.
