Rehabilitaion Center Design
In order to explore more about civil engineering, I undertook this project to reimagine how rehabilitation centers can utilize symbolic foldable and creaseable architecture. The design features two levels connected by a gently sloping folded surface that allows people to move above and below the builidng. As the slope gradually decreases, the space becomes more open and accessible. Water channels follow the folds of the building, creating a calming atmosphere while guiding movement and reinforcing the idea of healing through guided design.
Supplies
Almost any 3d modeling software (Fusion 360 or Revit prefered)
Brainstorming Ideas
I began by brainstorming when and how foldable architecture could be applied in a meaningful way. Through this process, I explored how many rehabilitation centers use rigid, standardized architectural designs that can negatively influence behavior and emotional well-being. This inspired me to develop a rehabilitation center concept that uses folded forms and gradual transitions to create a more supportive and human environment.
Drawing Basic Design
To begin, I started by drawing out the basic side profile in Fusion 360. I created a simple sketch and made a series of triangles and connecting lines to define the changing slope of the bulding. Since I started with the sides I also made sure to incorporate some space for a sitting area outside as well as some slots for windows.
Basic Building Shape
Then by using the inistial sketch, you can make vairous extrusions for the basic outlined shape of the building. During this step I made sure not to make any defined protusions such as steps so that it will be easier to make slots for the small water way. Also feel free to re-edit the original sketch to make sure that the side profile is natural and is defined as desired.
Sketching and Making the Water Way
Next I made an outline for how I imaged the water path should be. I made sure to add multiple small paths so that the flow of water isn't static to one area, but also not to too much to where the path of the water is chaotic and noisy. I made a simple winding path with ample space inbetween to give people space to sit and relax.
Adding in More Defined Details
After completing the paths for the water way, I went back and added mroe defiend detials such as stairs to access the roof top. This is to ensure that the details such as stairs won't interupt the natural flow and direction of the water you designed.
Adding Small Details
Next I added the smaller details such as doors and windows to my building design to make it look more refined and complete.
Final Renders
Now you're done with the build! After some rendering magic you can now see the polished design of the reimagined rehabilitation center.
