Refugee Shelter-Open Design, Structures & Technologies.
The purpose of the project is to build a refugee shelter. The structure is square in shape, 20 square meters and includes 3 bunk beds and a toilet. Also outside the structure but in its equally covered part is a cooking area. This structure is capable of accommodating up to 6 people. The construction of the shelter is based on a 1.5 m by 1.5 m canvas and the basic material is bamboo. Materials and construction method were chosen such that it can be erected immediately in case of emergency. It is covered with sheet metal which is elevated to create a gap between the wall and the roof and to allow for air flow and sufficient lighting inside. Two openings (one door opening and one fixed) have been placed opposite to the structure to create a clear opening. The whole structure is elevated by 40 cm to prevent moisture. The secondary walls of the structure are made of a bamboo grid between the columns where it is covered internally and externally with clay. It is possible to expand to create a settlement and make the structures more stable.

POURED BASE FROM PLASTER (0.2CM)

MEASURING THE STICKS
In this part we measured each stick's lenght in the scale we created our model in.
CUTTING THE PIECES
A saw was used to help with the cutting, and two people were neccessary in order to have "clean" cuts.
SMOOTHING THE EDGES
The edges were smoothened with the use of sandpaper. This will take some of the lenght so keep that in mind, do not sand too much otherwise you will lose height.
CREATING THE MOLD AND FIXING THE STICKS
Polysterene was used as a mold for the plaster because it is easy to cut in home and generally to use
POURING PLASTER AND REMOVING THE MOLD
The mixture must be on the liquid side. Pour from one side an then move it around for an equal result.
PLACING THE BEAMS TO CONNECT THE COLUMNS
This is the part were the structure is being finalised. Good mesaurments and constant checking for each stick.
PLACING THE ROOF
The roof is made out of cardboard, painted with acrylic spray then glued on.
CONSTRACTION OF THE GRID FOR THE WALL COVERINGS
This the final part were the general idea of the structure is being shown. Bamboo sticks were used because of their flexibility and covered with clay.
