Recycled Hand Knit Plastic Grocery Bag Purse

In this Instructable, we are going to make a knit purse out of old plastic bags.

Supplies

You will need 2 things for this project:

Lots of plastic grocery bags (How many will depend on how big your bag is. A good idea is to add two or three bags as you need more yarn.)

Straight knitting needles (I used US 35)

Making Your Yarn

The first thing you will need to do, is to turn the plastic bags into yarn.

To do this:

1. Cut the handles and sides of the bags.

2. Stretch into strips.

3. Tie the strips into one continuous tail.

4. Repeat step 1 - 3, until you have a very long tail to cast on your purse.

Knitting the Body of the Purse

After creating your yarn, cast on the length of your bag using a long tail cast on. (I casted on 7 stitches.)

Knit in stockinette until you reach the length you want for your bag folded.

Tip: You may want to clip any really big tails on your knots.

Seaming the Purse Together

Next, seam both your purse sides using extra pieces of yarn. (If you need to, make some more yarn strips from step 1.)

Tip: I had a long tail on one of my purse sides from the cast on, so I used that to seam one side of the bag.

Adding Your Purse Strap

For the purse strap, braid three pieces of yarn together. Then pull one end of the strap through one top side of the purse, then do the same for the other. Secure the loose ends inside the bag by means of tying and weaving them in.

And You're Done!
