Recycled Camera Parts Jewerly - for Photographers
I am pretty sure that if you are a photographer or if you like photography, you have saw at least an abandoned camera in a garage sale or a flea market or a pawn shop.
Part of these cameras may not have a big value or were rare, but you can create great jewelry articles with some of they parts. Let's try it!
Supplies
- You will need at least 2 analog camera bodies or 2 vintage lenses if you can get the exact or similar models of both. Your crafted jewelry will look more symmetrical.
- You will need a screw driver set to remove the screws.
- A Dremel tool to make some small holes.
- A pair or a bag of earrings hooks.
- A 3d printer (optional).
- A sheet of acrylic and a jewelry saw. (optional)
- Oil or Grease Cleaning Liquid.
- Pliers to open and close the earrings hooks.
Finding the Parts You Will Need.
All cameras have the next parts and you can use them to make earrings.
Mount, it is not important the type of mount but some of them are heavy, but big earrings exist, so if you used to use them, you can try to make earrings from camera mounts.
Dial, the dials have a nice appeal of the numbers and it will always remember you about photography so they are a great choice.
All Lenses have this parts.
Aperture Ring, some of them are metal some of them are plastic, and they are pretty looking with the numbers of the apertures and will always remember you about photography.
Focus Ring, the same as aperture rings but wider, in this case you will have to test if the wide of this rings feels comfortable in your wrist.
Note: for both rings you will need to test first if the diameter of the ring fits your wrist. You can use a piece of cardboard to test the diameter of the ring.
Aperture blades, to obtain the aperture blades you will need some disassembly but the look of them are just amazing for earrings.
Note: Avoid buying bent or smashed lenses for this project, some of this lenses are hard to disassemble because of the deformation the lens suffer with an impact.
Camera Lens Parts
1. Aperture Rings, this can be obtained disassembling the mount of the lens. Once removed the mount the aperture ring might be ready free or will need to remove small screws to release the ring.
2. Focus Ring, to remove the focus ring follow these steps:
- Remove the front cover of the lens, some covers use glue and tabs, other are like a screw and you have to turn it anticlockwise.
- Remove the screws that hold all the front elements.
- Remove 3 screw that hold the focus ring.
Note: For the rings you will need to use a jewelry saw to remove a part of the aperture ring. This way you can use it in your wrist as a bracelet.
3. Once you removed the front elements of the lens it is probable that you will see the aperture blades. To release the aperture blades follow these steps.
- Disassemble the mount and remove the aperture ring.
- Remove the barrel lock, and rotate the main barrel.
- Some aperture blades are retained with small screws around the main barrel.
- Be careful when removing the aperture blades the mechanism it might disassemble and every blade will disorder.
- Once the aperture blades removed you can glue the mechanism to avoid disassembly.
- Or you can make a case with 3d printing to avoid disassembling.
Camera Body Parts
- Mount, to disassemble the mount you only will need to remove 4 to 6 screws in the front of the body camera. Clean the mount and attach an earring hook into one of the holes of the mount.
- Dials, you will have to find a compatible screwdriver to remove this special screw. On some cameras the dial it is just glued so you will need a knife to remove carefully the Dial label. And then just use the Dremel tool to make an small hole for the earring hook.
