First off, I have to give my wife credit for this one. She works teaching ESL to different age groups from the age of about two to thirteen. The other day, one of her coworkers was throwing out some old board games that were missing some pieces and she asked for them.

Obviously, not all board games are the same, so you'll have to be creative with what you do with them, but I will describe what my wife did with the one she got.

Since she teaches a lot of young children, she thought that it would be a good idea to make one of the games into something that can help the kids learn English while having fun!

What you need:

-An old board game of some sort
-Some dice
-Some markers

The game that my wife got was just a board and was missing any other pieces that were once with it. It consisted of a bunch of blank spaces that you would move through when you roll the dice.

What she did was simply write a bunch of different actions for the children to do when they landed on any particular square. This way, the kids have to read what they need to do and then do the associated action. Some examples of actions that she wrote on the board are: "Roar like a lion", "Dance", "Clap your hands", "Laugh", "Sing" etc.

It's a nice simple game that young children can play and learn from, plus it saves something from going to the landfill and recycles it instead!
